Realignment--Winners & Losers?? (Take #2)

Featured Replies

I appreciate your objectivity.

Now--add 3 more solid non-district games. (I think that Lloyd will be dropped in the near future). Now--Beechwood isn't one to shy away from good games and neither is Coach Rash (there have been years with some bad games--but that is because a lot of bigger schools wouldn't schedule them). Add 3 more non-district games--and things start to add up--with a little extra. Think about things like the field--that was basically a guaranteed loan. They still owe money on that for sure.

So--hopefully--that makes a little more sense. It could have also happened if they moved up--but what is the gain? Nothing (contrary to what Birdsfan refuses to explain in detail)

Now--look at things from a higher level (and I hate to put it like this because I have a good feeling about how things will turn out):

*New Head Coach (following a legend)

*New AD

*2 year wait before moving up (and I feel like there were some people who knew that they were only going to have to wait 2 years). If it makes sense--they can move up quickly.

So--if any of this sounds bad--I apologize up front (hopefully it doesn't sound arrogant or condescending--I have a tendency to put things down in that manner). I am just trying to lay down the facts.

Makes sense.

I agree there are a couple of keys things concerning Beechwood's decision that may be a large factor IMO:

1. It is only for two years (Not Four) so they can always move up next time.

2. Beechwood has trouble finding teams to play in the past and I think the 2A schools (NCC, HC, Lloyd, and Newport) would all be receptive to playing Beechwood in non-district games. If Beechwood were in 2A they may not find many NKY teams willing or able to schedule them especially in Weeks 10 and 11.

This thread is EXACTLY why the ruling is terrible. We are talking about who the "winners" are because they dont have to play tougher competition.

St. X never plays a school of similar size and/or population base. Except for that team with the Shamrock. You know the one...last year's 4A State Champion.

The big winners are the traditional big winners. I believe the road to the pizza box just got easier for these teams.

Beechwood, Mayfield, Pikeville, Danville, Breathitt Co, Boyle Co, Highlands, Covington Catholic, Trinity, St. Xavier, Male

Bell County is looking toward two or three years of their best football to come along in a while. With the new alignment, Rockcastle will still be in district and region... however, traditional play-off rivalries i.e., Ashland, Johnson Central, Highlands, Covington Catholic will move up. Rockcastle, Bell, and Boyle County seem to be left to :fight: for the title!

It wont matter how many classes are made it wouldnt effect the higher schools. They will still play the toughest schedules of any teams in teh state no matter what. What this WILL do is give lessen the competition so more teams can call themselves state champs.

PS. Rofl @ the weak attempt at the dig on me. Im glad you want a handout for your team. ;)

In this little debate as to whether Beechwood should request to move up, now or in two years or whenever, you all may have forgotten something: only schools with geographical reasons were permitted to move up. With Beechwood having nearby 1A opponents, if they had requested a move up it would have been denied.

As to why Highlands and CovCath ended up in 5A vs 4A, again think geography. Had Highlands been placed in 4A with CovCath, it still would have been a spread out district, with the closest team being Pendleton Co, which is probably an hour's drive from CovCath. Putting them in 5A put them in a district with exclusively nearby schools. And that is what the KHSAA wanted to do: look at the move up issue strictly from a geography viewpoint and that's what they did.

"The primary reason to being allowed to move up was geography, and equally important conditions for denial of a request was competitive ability."

Beechwood could compete very well in AA, as they could have the last 15 years.

Don't know where your quote came from but competitive ability for denial was not an issue from what I understand. The discussions involving move up requests centered exclusively on geography and a request was only considered if the requesting party was in a district that required great amounts of travel. If a school like Washington County requested a move up because of their concern about the strength of their district opponents, such concern was not a sufficient reason. Only geography was considered, strength of competion was not, and thus Washington County's request was denied.

Don't you think it would have been extremely difficult for Beechwood to claim that its district of Bellevue, Ludlow and Dayton required extreme amounts of travel? And I believe their request would have been denied (which is why I think they didn't request it to begin with). The KHSAA made it clear when they solicited the schools to see if they wanted to request a move up, that only geography would be taken into consideration. Perhaps I am wrong, but of the schools that were approved, all of them had some pretty compelling geography arguments and those that were not approved, did not.

To answer the question who are the winners and losers. I'm not sure who the winners are, but in the long run the losers are the state of kentucky football.

The quote was from the final realignment letter to all schools sent from the KHSAA on August 21. So you saying that "Only geography was considered, strength of competion was not," is not correct. ;)

They played Moeller in 2004, who is close, but KY fans don't like to bring that game up.

Well, they beat Moeller in 2003, but your points are well-made. St. Xavier and Trinity don't always dominate schools with similar size, numbers and talent pools.

Really? Why?

Some schools have to travel less.

Some schools have increased their chances of winning a state championship, whereas before they had none, especially in A and AAAA.

KY had a big enrollment discrepancy in its 4 class system. The new system alleviates most of that.

In the future, the State may looking at shrinking A and 6A, which would really alleviate the enrollment discrepancy.

People need to look at ALL the schools and see what is best, not just what appears on the surface of the issue.

Whitley Co. goes from a district which Madison Central, GRC, South laurel, Lincoln Co. and North Laurel to one with Letcher Central, Perry Central, Clay Co. and North Laurel. The other district in the region is not nearly as strong in the new alignment as in the old.

The Colonels should have an opportunity to do real well in the playoffs with an opportunity to play for a regional title in the next few years.

still not as good as the elementary school district that Corbin has had for the few years, but yeah I agree with you, I look for them to have some playoff success

That was my point. If St. X and Trinity want REAL competition...fill the non-district schedule with Moeller, Montgomery Bell, Birmingham Hoover etc.

Further...By the way some of these folks think...all those St. X and Trinity State Championships don't mean much because they were playing against smaller schools with smaller population bases to draw from. They have been playing 'down' for years.
