Realignment--Winners & Losers??

Featured Replies

Not trying to knitpick here, or cause a riff, but seriously, how long can you say until recently? It's been 6 years and we aren't dropping off in the least, if anything, getting stronger. Far from a flash in the pan wouldn't you say?

As an NCC fan, I have no problem with Beechwood staying 1A!!!!

98--that is a very fair question.

My recently starts in 2000 (which is when NCC beat Beechwood in the playoffs). I say 2000 because NCC changed the offense during that season--and the chosen son started calling the plays. At that point--they began to pose a threat. I didn't go FairFans route and say 1 win in the past 5 years--it is 7-4 since 2000 (and I stated that before).

My point here is this--all I have heard for the past 4 years (going on 5) is how much more talented NCC is than Beechwood. But the past 4 seasons--the record breaks down like this:

2002: 2-0

2003: 1-1

2004: 2-0

2005: 1-0

That is 6-1 on my scale.

Now--you may have a better program--and you may be playing Beechwood closer. But where I come from--the team that puts more points on the board is the better team (that team includes coaches and players).

So--you can say that NCC is getting stronger. Sure, I agree. But the end result is the same.

As far as flash in the pan goes--I don't know the answer to that (any more than I could predict how Beechwood is going to do this year--but I know for a fact that it won't be anywhere near as bad as some have said).

I just can't buy the argument that Beechwood should move up simply because they can maintain a district rivalry with NCC (and--no one has said that directly--but that is what it comes down to).

And I bring back a couple more points of interest:

*I find it "interesting" that people say that Beechwood should move up--but don't make that same comparison to NCC. The "interesting" part is--NCC has been everyones 1A LOCK this season.

*I find it "interesting" that people don't realize that Beechwood not moving up hurts NCC more than Beechwood (because Beechwood has shown historically that they can compete with bigger schools more consistently/more often.

In fairness--NCC is a great team and a great program. But Beechwood's dominance (and continued success) over NCC has done more to increase the level of NCC's play than Beechwood. You would think that they would be the ones who want to move up. Beechwood has already shown (over an extended period of time) that they can compete with bigger schools.

Lloyd: has beat Beechwood 2 or 3 times in the past 16 years.

Newport: I can think of 2 times they have beat Beechwood (1993?/1999)

Holy Cross: They are 0 for life against Beechwood.

I have to agree with those who say that Beechwood would have been better served by going to 2A. But that would leave a void in 1A. I think the better solution, based on the facts you list here, would be to move Holy Cross to 1A. And to suggest that NCC isn't (or hasn't been) a formidable rival for Beechwood just doesn't ring true. And suggesting that NCC move up, makes no sense at all. Probably why no one has suggested it.
I believe this is the first time, I agree with Rockpride :thumb:

As always with the KHSAA it all comes down to dollars!!! This decision is about big business and how it can expand the profit base for the fat cats that run the athletic programs for this state. Is just a way of trying to difuse the private - public debate without having to address it.

PT and Mayfield should add some hardware over the next decade in this system! I see whoever wins of Mayfield, Beechwood, and Lou Holy Cross to win most years!

PT Coach Perry Thomas was like a little kid in a candy store last night on the news at the thought of their new playoff road!

While it looks like Paducah Tilghman should have an easy go of it in the weak as water 3A district 1....I wouldn't be clearing out space for multiple trophies just yet!!:jump:

Bird--seriously, read the entire post (I know it is probably a little too long). My point is (backed up with factual data) is that they have only been formidable opponent in the past 5 years (and the win/loss record still suggests that Beechwood owns the series--especially in the last 4 years). Just because the score have been closer--doesn't mean that NCC is on the same level as Beechwood OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. I agree with "lately" just not historically. Before 2000--I seem to remember a lot of 40-0 thrashings. I know it was closer in the early 90's--but it didn't stay that way for long.

Just go ahead and explan how Beechwood moving up makes sense--and NCC does not. Again--as I stated before--Beechwood's success forced NCC to step things up. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

Now that Beechwood won't be around--NCC needs to find someone else to step up to (and that isn't going to happen with anyone in their new district). Play Newport, Holy Cross and Lloyd is not going to help NCC any more than Beechwood playing Bellevue, Ludlow and Dayton.

So--Beechwood should go out of their classification just so their can be one tougher district? That logic doesn't make sense to me. (I doubt that you are goingt to see the logic in any of this--but I am being open minded).

There are other reasons besides what happens between the lines that makes this an "okay" move for Beechwood. I see where some of you are coming from--but that is only because I choose to look at all the arguments presented--not just the one that I like the most.

The one thing I will say--anyone who knows Coach Rash knows that he doesn't shy away from compeition. I think the powers that be actually sat down and thought this through and decided to do what was best overall--not just what is best for the Monday morning QB's. And--I know for a fact that it has nothing to do with being scared of NCC.

I don't understand Russellville jumping 2 classes to 3A. They cited travel concerns as to why they didn't want to play in 1A and I can't blame them. But a move to 2A would have been the same or better than 3A as far as travel goes. Look at this:

3A opponents (their new district) - Adair, Butler, Edmonson and Hart Counties

2A opponents (where they likely would have ended up) - Fort Campbell, Hancock County, Owensboro Catholic, Todd County Central

Seems to me that Russellville wants a shot at a couple of district championships in 3A, but they will never get by Tilghman (among others) from District 1 and E-town (among others) in District 3.

If they ended up in the 2A district, a championship would have been VERY hard to come by.

quickslick - Read your entire post a few times. Can't say that your facts hold up though.

(I doubt that you are goingt to see the logic in any of this--but I am being open minded).
That's for sure. And I really don't think you're being open-minded at all.

The word is "hypothetical" BZ.

Too easy!

I agree with Birdsfan, it doesn't make sense for NCC to move up. For one reason there are 0 NKY schools in 3A. So that right there would create a problem.

Secondly, I agree with QS, overall record the last four years I freely admit Beechwood has been better in all facets. But you do have to admit that we have been up to the challenge over the last 6 much more than past history. And the trend is leaning towards evening out.

I will miss having Beechwood in our district. But knowing the potential they bring of knocking NCC out of the playoffs year in and year out, I welcome them staying in 1A. And as you said, we're, also, not scared of playing tough competition, as you note the step up in schedule recently. Last year one could get away with saying that as weak as our schedule was.

Also, I don't think anyone anywhere said ANYTHING about Beechwood being scared of NCC and that being the reason for them moving up.

Bowling Green is in as far as tradition. Hop-town and Waren Central and Owensboro along with JH are THE only threat from the West. Its very weak JH may be undefeated through regional play every year for a while in the new format.

If Mark Brown hangs around a few more years John Hardin should content year in and year out. The soph and fresh classes are loaded with speed and size nice combo for success along with good coaching. Should make the play-offs every year, but anything can happen than.

Paducah Tilghman benefits as much as anyone, to be sure.

Franklin-Simpson could benefit from the move, too.

As for Beechwood, it's possible that a request to play up would have been denied anyway, since their new district has only four teams. The state could have moved to Bracken County into the district, but I don't blame Beechwood for moving up. They can keep their games with NewCath, Lloyd and the like on the schedule with little difficulty.

I would say you overlooked Christian County.
