August 3, 201610 yr Nope. Rules state that any ball that is in beyond the barrier to the playing field is free game to both fans and players. The fan had every right to go after the ball, as did Joey. Maybe by the rule, you are correct but my fan code says the opposite. You do everything you can to help the home team, including letting your star first baseman make a play on that ball. If it's an opponent, throw your popcorn at him, sing him some Nelly, whatever it takes to distract him from making the catch and hurting your team.

August 4, 201610 yr I would venture to say that someone suggested he apoligize to the fan... I'd like to think that he was actually sorry too. It was pretty mean. But c'mon. If you're a fan sitting there, you have to be prepared for that situation. Basic fan knowledge is going out the window.

She complained to me expecting sympathy. What she got was a lecture on paying attention while at sporting events.

August 5, 201610 yr Before Votto apologized to the guy, the guy told a writer for the Enquirer that he hoped he had a chance to apologize to Votto. Said that he knew better than that, and he screwed up. Like I said, much ado about nothing.
