July 1, 201610 yr Been meaning to post this for a while and was reminded to by a post from @WhoozYoDaddy. Smokers tossing out Cigarette Butts is one of my biggest pet peeves. Our city has worked hard to beautify the downtown area and placing mulch and shrubs at the intersections on highway 27. Yet every time I stop I look out and see thousands of Cigarette Butts on the pavement. They are in the mulch, against the curbs and tossed around flower pots that are sitting all around down town. We have had mulch fires started my butts flicked out the window and into landscaping at a couple of different intersections here in town. How many different forest fires and how many acres of land have been destroyed by butts being tossed out of the window as a smoker would rather toss it than put it in the ashtray. (I know, new cars don't have ash trays) Stand outside of any business and watch how many smokers as they walk up to the entrance take one last drag on their cigarette and then flick the butt onto the sidewalk or into the parking lot. Even though many businesses now have a dedicated place to place cigarette butts outside of their entrance, more smokers than not would rather just toss the butt on the ground. By some estimates it takes 12 years for cigarette butts to decompose. They are toxic waste as they are poisoning the waterways. Cigarette Butts are the most common form of litter in the world, with approximately 4.5 trillion butts being tossed away yearly. I'd love to hear from some smokers that think it is okay to toss their butts down when and where they like.
July 1, 201610 yr Is it ok to throw your gun out the window? Heck no. But somehow smokers get a pass and are not really shamed for their daily littering.
July 1, 201610 yr I once saw a guy flick a burning butt out his window and watched it get sucked right back into the rear side window and into the back seat where his kids were sitting. Idiot.
July 1, 201610 yr Pretty sure a McDonald's in Etown burned down last week because of this exact reason.

July 1, 201610 yr Dispose of your butts properly, it's common courtesy! On a recent trip to the gulf we had a woman sitting a few umbrellas down from us. Every 1/2 hour or so she would walk out knee deep and fire up a cigarette. She must have been smoking Virginia Slim 2000 centimeter, extra long, jumbo, slow burners. It took forever for her to finish these things. The smoke would blow back onto shore to be smelled by anyone unlucky enough to be in it's path. If you want to smoke, that's up to you, but at least have the decency to do it where it doesn't affect others!
July 1, 201610 yr I don't understand why when in their car, they can't use the ashtray. Because they don't want the garbage in their car so they throw it out the window so the rest of us can enjoy it, I guess.
July 1, 201610 yr Smokers think the world is their ash tray. Most cars don't have ash trays. Thanks auto makers!
July 1, 201610 yr Smokers think the world is their ash tray. Most cars don't have ash trays. Thanks auto makers! I don't know when that started, but ash trays are now an additional option, which is fine with me.

It is just a disgusting and gross habit that will take years off your life obviously. When I see young people smoke I want to smack them upside the head (just kidding of course). It just boggles my mind that anyone would ever start smoking.
July 1, 201610 yr My step-mom is a smoker and I hate it. However, she has this ashtray thing that is about the size and shape of an aluminum can. The top is sort of concave and has a hole in the middle to collect ashes and cigarettes. She keeps it in one of the middle drink holders. I don't blame automakers. I blame individuals. Similar to how I don't gun manufacture for gun deaths. I blame the individual.
