Sad Truth About UK Football - and how they can get better

Featured Replies

UK FOOTBALL SINCE 2010:

- OVERALL RECORD: 25-48 (34% wins)

- SEC RECORD: 8-40 (16% wins)

- NON CONFERENCE RECORD (excluding Louisville): 16-3 (84% wins)

- LOUISVILLE: 1-5 (16% wins)

While the numbers are bleak, when you break them down, the picture gets even bleaker.

The only SEC teams UK has beaten: Vandy (2), South Carolina (3), Ole Miss, Tennessee, Mississippi St.

Non-Conference Teams UK has beaten: 64% of UK’s wins have come against very poor competition.

- Akron

- Charleston (2)

- WKU (2)

- Central Michigan

- Jacksonville St.

- Kent St.

- Samford

- Miami (OH)

- Alabama St.

- UT Martin

- Ohio

- ULM

- Louisiana Lafayette

- Eastern Kentucky

Non-Conference Teams who have beaten UK:

- Pittsburg (in bowl) Note that Pitt is the only power 5 non-conference opponent UK has played and they didn’t choose to play them.

- WKU (2) – worth noting that as soon as UK realized WKU was capable of beating them consistently, they immediately stopped playing them.

WHAT UK MUST DO TO BE BOWL ELIGIBLE CONSISTENTLY:

- Win the 3 non-conference cupcake games each year, even if this means avoiding high quality lower-level competition – like WKU. These 3 games must be won at all costs (including buying out opponents that are unexpectedly good (Southern Mississippi)

- Must win 2 of 3 games against Vanderbilt, Missouri, and South Carolina each year. (with Muschamp likely to turn SC around, the Vandy / Mizzu games become must wins)

- Must drop the game vs Louisville. It would be a PR nightmare, but it’s the right thing to do if the goal is to build the program. This allows scheduling one more cupcake game, gets 4 non-conference wins, and gets a bowl while only winning 2 real games (Mizzu / Vandy)

I think it is also fascinating that in the entire history of the Southeastern Conference, which began in 1933, Kentucky has posted seven winning conference records. That's insane.

Kentucky is not an SEC school.....

Or a Big 10 team.

Needless to say, we (UK fans) have gotten used to seeing very bad football in the bluegrass. I bet folks who were tired of going to the music city bowl with Brooks sing a little different tune now.

Cawood said it best. Stop buying tickets and leave the stadium empty. Eventually the administration will take football seriously and will start winning games.

UK football is the girl you liked in high school that baked you cookies. She was cool at times but dull when compared to the cheerleaders. Basketball is the cheerleader.

So you take a comment from KSR from a Ville fan and start a thread on BGP? Nice. Very original True Blue. Welcome to BGP.

The SEC is a league of teams that, for the most part, know their place. They all know that our basketball team is going to stomp theirs. They show up to watch, get a free t-shirt and leave at halftime for the party. In the rare event they win, it's a three day party. Exact same thing for us in football. My bama friends love to come to CWS stadium. They say we're exceptionally friendly and polite. It's because we know our place in football society. If we win, no doubt we're taking those goal posts with us. If we lose, it's no big deal. It was pre-ordained. Most of us were back in the parking lot tailgating at half time anyway.

Huh? Administration renovated the stadium and are building a football training facility that is first class I don't see that they are the problem.

Because fans quit buying tickets Jokers last year....

That doesn't answer my question. What else does the administration have to do? The minute Stoops walked through the door this was going to be 5 or 6 year process to get to be competitive if everything went right. Everything did not go right but what else does the administration have to do that they have not done?

I have always been of the opinion that Brooks wanted and asked for facility upgrades (I remember a recruiting area being a big thing he was asking for). Those things never materialized, which IMO "ran" him off. (This is just my speculation, which is worth 0).

Obviously the Joker head coach in waiting thing was a fiasco...

The administration learning from it's mistakes, have now invested in the program...the unfortunate part, is they became 10-15 years behind in the college football facilities arms race.

The fact this state doesn't produce a high level of SEC caliber prospects make winning at UK tough.

I thought Brooks and staff did a good job of taking unheralded players and making them "superstars". IMO this is what has to be done at UK because of the lack of appeal from Elite talent.

Stoops is getting a "higher star" recruit, but the jury is still out on how they will develop that player over a 4/5 year process.

What is UK's recruiting budget compared to the other league schools?

I know a few years ago, during Calipari's first or second year, the LHL reported that just the light show for midnight madness was in excess of $350,000. And that was more than the entire football recruiting budget that year.

With the addition of Stoops, some of that changed. The university put more money into recruiting and assistant coaches pay, as well as the aforementioned facilities upgrades, but I do not know the current numbers.

Anyone?

Don't disagree with any of this but the administration since Stoops arrival has done it's part. The Jimmy and Joe's aspect is where it is at now.
