Broken down sooner.

7 MVPs for Bonds, 1 for Jr. Other factors go into that, but I don't follow all the logic that it is "easily" Jr. if Bonds had stayed off the juice. 7 MVPs is impressive, I don't care who you are or what you did to your body. Take away '01-'04 and Bonds still has the most all time.

That '01-'04 stretch is still the most captivating and dominating stretches of sports in my lifetime.

I don't think it's easily Jr no matter what.... But the question was best overall player, not best offensive player.

Bonds had more home runs and batting average was similar for both... Close to .300 I think. Bonds gets the nod offensively.

But Griffey was the better defensive player... When they were in their primes, Griffey covered all the ground in centerfield. Bonds was a corner outfielder as Van Slyke played CF...

Also, if you do any reading of quotes from former players and teammates... I think Griffey was a better teammate...

JR gets my vote as better overall... But it's close IMO... Certainly 2 of the top players in their era, maybe "THE" top 2.

Could be a fantastic debate if Griffey didn't have the injuries and Bonds didn't cheat.

It's Bonds and I don't think it's close. I say that being the biggest Griffey Jr. fan around. Bonds is the GOAT.

Griffey Jr. By a landslide. Compare them to the point that KGJr broke down (13 seasons) and Griffey Jr is superior in batting average, HRs, RBIs, Slugging %. Add in the fact that he was better in the field, and there really is not a comparison, IMO.

They both played 22 years...

Bonds 762 HR, 1,996 RBI, 514 SB, 2,558 BB, .298 BA, 2,227 R, 2,935 H

Griffey 630 HR, 1,836 RBI, 184 SB, 1,312 BB, .284 BA, 1,662 R, 2,781 H

It's really not even close.

Bonds is a 7 time MVP, 14 time All-Star, 7 time Gold Glove Winner, and 12 time Silver Slugger recipient.

Griffey Jr. is a 1 time MVP, 13 time All-Star, 10 time Gold Glove Winner, and 7 time Silver Slugger recipient.

Bonds stole over 500 bases as well. Griffey Jr. had just over 180.

Amazingly, neither one won the Rookie of the Year award.

Bonds did win 7 Gold Gloves so it's not like he was a slouch in the field. I agree Griffey Jr. was the better defensive player, but the gap wasn't all that significant.

As an aside, Tracy Jones stated yesterday that Jr. is the first overall number one draft pick to make the HOF. That surprised me.

Obviously we are getting a biased result asking on BGP, but when you hear most national pundits talk about who is the best player ever, Bonds' name will be mentioned at times in consideration. You never hear Ken Griffey Jr.

Some think he might have, which is why his body broke down so fast.

I believe the best player I have watched in my lifetime was Barry Bonds.

I don't know what it fully means, but the craziest Bonds' stat to me are the amount of walks he drew. He led the league 12 times in that category. Griffey, 0. In that '01-'04 span, Bonds would normally get 1-2 pitches a game and cause havoc. Pitchers were afraid to pitch to him.

I believe Bonds played in 300 more games than Griffey did.... thanks to his steroids and Jr's injuries....

That's what I'm saying. IF Jr. could have avoided the injury bug it wouldn't even be a debate because Bonds would be second in every category.
