Discussion of the 2016 All BluegrassPreps.com Girls Team

No because Niece, Berger and Glover didn't either.

Right, but there weren't the same questions about quality of competition that Creech and Jenkins has faced. Getting to state might have been the one thing that put her over the top.

Very possible.

My Lord she averaged 50, 60 somewhere in there has to mean something regardless of the competition, its not like she was playing 5th graders. A D-1 school obviously thought it meant something as well. She drew double and triple teams every game she played, does anyone have any idea how tiring that could be because I sure don't. Creech deserves to be in the top 10 and it blows me away that she isn't and that people think she isn't deserving.

I think she is deserving to be on the team but I get why she didn't make it. I think is what folks are saying.

By that same logic put Creech on the team and take any of those other girls off and supporters of the girl taken off will say, she's more talented than Creech, she played a tougher schedule than Creech, has faced better competition than Creech and she is going to a better college than Creech. Your reply to that is "well she averaged 50 points and 14 rebounds so she is a top 10 player in the state"? That may work for some folks but obviously the committee felt otherwise.

Again, I think this is a more of a testament to how talented girls basketball players are becoming in the state. Like Clizzy said, once the initial shock wears off of Creech not being on the team and each individual girl is looked at completely I can see why the committee came up with this team. Especially after talking to people who I know watch a lot of girls high school basketball and have seen all of these girls play.

Great point. Lawnboy was begging Mercer County(Seygan Robins team) to pump the brakes on the beatdown they put on Leslie County in the first game of the Sweet 16.

So, let's be specific with Creech. If we aren't a big believer that stats make a difference, what circumstances would decidedly put Creech in the "Top Ten"?

Seeing her and the rest play which I can't say I've done.

Seeing them matters. I finally got to see Carson Williams play. Great, great player but I don't think he's #1 in the state despite his stats and team's success(and I'm thrilled he's coming to NKU).

Subjective. Eyeball test. How others evaluate them.

I have seen every girl on the list play, as well as Ms. Creech, and I would take all 10 on this list above her.

Look, her numbers are eye popping. I went and watched her play in the regional semi finals against Powell County. She scored 49 points, so it would be hard to say she had an "off" night. She's a sub 6 foot guard that's not a great athlete (good athlete, but not elite) and is a below average shooter. She's got good handles for an off guard...but is not going to every be confused for a point guard. She's crafty and scores well in the lane. Does a good job of getting to the free throw line.

Powell played a soft zone and gave her all the threes and mid range jump shots she wanted. My guess is that if they had chased her, they were scared she would beat the chaser and score and/or get fouled. In the half court, the soft zone worked pretty well and made creech a jump shooter. She took a few threes (and made one I think) and several mid range shots. I didn't chart it but I would guess she didn't shoot a great percentage on jumpers...and they were basically uncontested. Again, the other team was so worried about her getting into the lane they just conceded those jump shots. She actually had a teammate who knocked down 4 or 5 threes and that really helped Jenkins.

Where she really hurt Powell was in transition. When she got a rebound or loose ball she would take off down the floor and score almost every time. Powell had no one who could check or slow her down in transition. From what I have heard about her, that's definitely the strength of her game. She's far superior to those on her team and others in her area/region. It honestly looked like a 5th grade rec/upward league game where one team had the best player and she would just get the rebound and dribble down and score at will. Really hard to evaluate her because of the level of players on her own and the other team.

As far as the other areas of her game, it's really hard to evaluate her ability to pass and make her teammates better. Her teammates were, for the most part, standing wide open because the defense sagged in and shaded themselves toward creech. To her credit, she passed to the one girl on her team that could hit open shots and Powell had to adjust to at least acknowledge this other girl was on the floor. Defensively, Jenkins played a zone with Creech in the middle. It's obvious she's been coached to not commit a foul. I don't want to say she's not a good defender, but I was simply unable to really evaluate her ability to defend because she was not asked to do it. I am not saying that it was wrong...if she had gotten into foul trouble Jenkins would have gotten destroyed...but it made it impossible to tell if she could be a plus defender or not.

I will say this, I have only seen her play ONCE. However, from what I saw, I would not recruit her if I was a D1 coach. Just too many questions for me. I haven't seen too many (any?) sub 6 foot guards who weren't elite athletes AND were below average shooting the basketball make good college players. I am sure WKU saw her play in the summer against better competition and they obviously were comfortable enough with her game. I am anxious to see how she does in the KY-IN all star game as well as her college career at WKU. I am rooting for her...I think her story is great and she seems like a great kid from everything I have read...but I do feel that the 10 players selected are better then Creech.

Its obvious Creech can put the ball in the basket and can handle it pretty well, just think what she would do with better players on her team and playing better competition she would still average more than 25 a game. If that were the case would she then be in the top 10?

Agree or Disagree?

I know the committee strongly considered Creech but felt she was in the 11 to 13 range.

So what were the parameters of how "THE COMMITTEE" considered Creech? And how do you know that? Are you on the committee? How/where is THE COMMITTEE headquartered? How do we know that what is published in BGP is actually what the members of THE COMMITTEE voted for, or was it more of a "hey, give me your votes and I'll post my version, because its a secret ballot?" I'm looking at chain of custody of ballots here. And if it isn't a secret ballot, then you should publish who voted for whom, right? What was the criteria basis for selection? Certainly wasn't "stat based". Was diversity a consideration(geographic, public/private, other)? Blue Schools vs. Red Schools?

The BGP dues paying members want to know, since we are members but were not invited to the selection process. This is a problem with these types of teams/selection processes. Everything is secret. Just like the government.

Most importantly, how do I get on THE COMMITTEE for next year?

I am pretty impressed, that was a good parody of this post:

are you accusing me of plagiarism;) ?

Just inspiration.

You can take 5-8 average or slightly below average players, put them in a platoon system to keep them fresh and run them at one player for the whole game and it is very very difficult to score high numbers. If you put 2-3 good middle school players on a great high school player and run them in platoon, full court, against that player it will wear them down over time. There is always someone at your chest and in help defense. You always have to avoid the charge, you always have fresh bodies running at you. Yes, Creech did not play super strong competition, but she went against the best 2-3 that were on the floor the whole game and still scored 50 plus a contest while shooting a high percentage (no volume scoring here).

To me, the argument "she didnt play strong competition" doesn't hold as much weight when you look at her numbers. We act like any good player on a bad team could do this but that is not true. There are weak teams across the state year in and year out that play weak schedules. They dont all have a player dropping 50 with the whole team guarding them. They dont all play the whole game with God knows what kind of pressure on them. If it were par for the course we should see lots of high 40's to high 50's averages year in and year out on those bad teams who play bad schedules but we dont. Creech is the exception and should be on this team.

I guess when she makes the KY/IND All Star team and 1st Team All State across the board (coaches and press votes) that the BGP committee knows more than those guys. It happens from time to time, but like I said before, the committee missed this one big time. No other way to put it. Her and Boley should have been the first two on the list for not only performance, but what they have done in both their career and for KY High School Girl's basketball.

Im interested to know if Creech made the BGP team last year? Would be sad if she did last year and not this year..

I've already clearly stated that I have not seen ANY girl on this list and that my initial reaction was shock.

However, I then looked up the stats and talent level of each girl. I can see that every girl who made it is really good and how it's POSSIBLE they deserved it more than Creech. So I'm not smart enough to say who SHOULD or SHOULD NOT be on the team. I'll trust the folks who made this list and know a heckuva lot more than me about girls talent.

However, your (and others) continued argument that her stats should put her on the team or that she led her team to the region final( in a weak region) just doesn't offer us enough when it comes to comparisons.

I can see why she is looked at with a jaundiced eye though. The schedule she played is weak. The talent level of players she went against is below average. That matters when comparing her to other girls who are obviously very talented and playing tougher competition.

She obviously got dinged for that.

Her points scored were quite the accomplishment but I would also like to see how many minutes a game she was playing? Was she in games where they were blowing a team out or getting blown out still scoring at high rates? It's funny how since it's Whitney Creech it's OK she's a scoring machine. If it was ETown and they left Boley and Stinson in to blow out teams, there would be an outcry.

The KY/IND All Star team is seniors only. She's one of the top 12 seniors on the state. I'd say there will be quite a few girls on the KY/IN All Star team that didn't make the BGP Team.

I'd say the BGP team isn't nearly as political as the other teams. Anyone can go on ListServ and see coaches lobbying for votes for their players. Kind of ironic to suggest that coaches in the good old boy network would make every selection on their All State team the right choice.

No she did not make it last year.
