Should coaches be able to ban players from going on spring break??

Featured Replies

You would be amazed at the amount of parents that take fall break off during football season.

I think it's silly for a football coach to say that a player can't take a spring break. Guess baseball coaches will say no fall break for their players

Ok how about fall break during football season?

Didn't go out of town for spring break in 4 years of high school. Did spend that week doing things that would be frowned upon by the parents of my girlfriend at the time. Parents at work, kids with free time. Nothing to see here... :idunno:

If you go on fall break during football season, don't plan on playing any when you come back. Now some coaches have their bye week during fall break and have allowed some time off for kids to do what they want. If you blow off %10 of the season to go body surf, I don't need you.

Highschool kids no.

College kids I can see because they are either on scholarship or some sort of financial assistants or just a walk on and if your the last one your going to work hard and listen to the coaches to better yourself

In regards to fall break, more and more schools either are having their open week then or are trying like no other to get it that way. It's nothing more than a headache.

I know some schools like Bowling Green have their fall break/open week as the same and take the week completely off.....as in, go to the beach or Disney World. Someone can correct me, but I think Mayfield has done the same in the past? I know of some other programs not at their caliber who have started to do the same thing.

On the flip side of those who have a game Fall Break, I've also heard of giving the Freshmen-JV (Non Varsity guys) the option of taking the week off (obviously not scheduling any Fr/JV games for that week).

Spring football allows us to get live reps without worrying about getting banged up for a game. It helped us improve substantially at Mason. We have had a great spring at Mercer. Very productive.

A wise coach told me every time a HS player gets live reps he gets better.

Still... I am fine with guys getting time off for spring break.

Two different arguments.

It obviously cannot hurt a team.

My argument is that it's not required in order for a team to be successful. We see too many starting football players missing spring practice for other sports and yet the teams are still successful.

This is HS and those kids should play every sport they want to play. And, ultimately, talent on the field is the biggest factor.

But, Spring football was a big difference maker for us at Mason. It is best for schools that are not traditional football powers that have the most ground to make up. For some schools it turns into lineman camp. If they are getting live reps up front, that will make those kids much better. And, it helps at every position as well.

Coach, do you have spring practice during spring break?

Personally, I think it's Spring Break and the kids all deserve a break from school, sports and anything else. I think all school activities should be optional during Spring Break.

Is the thread starter serious?

Fall sports participants give up fall break, winter sports participants give up winter break, spring sports participants give up spring break. A football coach has no more authority to tell one of his players that he can't go on spring break then any other member of the faculty at the school. As much as some parents seem to want to abdicate their authority to raise their kids to schools, this one is solely on them.

I would also add that any coach that scheduled any type of workout or spring practice during spring break is displaying a certain level of arrogance and stupidity.

They just had 2 weeks off for winter break, and how many snow days on top of that. What do they need a break for?

Never. Players & coaches need a break. Bad enough.... Fall break their friends are at beach and they are at practice.

Because they are kids and their parents enjoy a week off of school and sports with them. It's pretty simple.

In a couple of weeks I'll answer this from the beach.
