Should coaches be able to ban players from going on spring break??

Featured Replies

I know that baseball teams don't let their players go on spring break, but do you think football coaches should be able to do the same. Spring Break is a good time for high school athletes to make awful decisions that could end up hurting a program. Thoughts??

High school parents should ban their children from going on Spring Break.

A coach could say don't go on spring break, but it's ultimately the parents decision. And for football, it's hard to enforce a tough punishment with it (loss of playing time) because it's not a spring sport.

I've seen coaches try this and were told by the AD or principal to not enforce and apologize. Baseball could get away with it because they're in season and have games scheduled.

The word ban doesn't sit well with me. High school kids should not go on Spring Break by themselves this is true. That's why we go as a family on spring break. College kids should be old enough to make good decisions. It all comes down to how they were raised and the group of friends they run with. Hopefully you have done a good job as a parent and some of that stuff you have preached stuck in that little developing grey matter they call a brain. If not, you cannot hide your child from life, it will happen whether you banned spring break or not. Good luck with that. More of taking the fun out of life in the name of safety. Why even live at all.

I would not let my HS kids go on Spring Break alone. But that doesnt mean teens cant get in trouble going on SB with their families.

No coach or school should ban their players from going on SB unless they have games and practices taking place during that time.

Kids have four years of high school. Really annoys me that parents want to take their kids on vacations during spring break or fall break and leave a team.

If kids are going to cut out on their teams during breaks they shouldn't play.

Spring break for high school students, in my opinion, is dumb to start with. Didn't have it when/where I went to school and it kind of floored me when I moved here and realized it goes on. But, I digress.

To answer the question, a coach CAN'T ban a player from going on spring break, unless that player is the coaches' son/daughter. Now, can a coach require that an athlete not go as a team rule? Yes. And if player does go, can a coach have a policy of some sort of discipline/punishment? They can if they want I suppose, and I have known some baseball coaches to do just that. Haven't heard of many football coaches doing that, but I'm sure there are some.

Regardless of the coach and my opinion of spring break, requiring a player to stay home and not go on spring break is a very tenuous policy. I know some parents actually take vacation time during their kids respective school spring break and take a family vacation and use it for family time. When that's the case, a coach is really messing with a family dynamic there. Now, the junior who loads up with 4 other friends and heads to Myrtle Beach on a testosterone driven quest to try and hook up with as many hoochies as he can find? Got no problem with keeping those kids on a leash. But it's definitely very difficult to draw that line and tell Billy it's ok for him to go, but tell Johnny he can't because he knows he isn't going on a family trip.

Baseball is in season and usually playing games over spring break. That's a pretty good reason for coaches to try to "ban" kids from going. Of course, every year there are probably a few baseball players that still end up going.

With football not being in season, what right would the coach have to say a kid could or couldn't go?? And really, kids don't need to go on spring break to make bad decisions.

Coaches can't control every aspect of a kids life.

A football coach would be severely overstepping his boundaries by banning kids from going on spring break. It is the off season and that is a parent's role. It is the coaches responsibility year round to educate kids on making good decisions and the consequences of actions.

Football technically isn't in season, but we all know football is a year round sport to any serious school.

I've known of kids who played football who go on Fall Break during the season and then miss a game.

I'm not saying that coaches should be able to ban a player from doing something outside like a trip or vacation or something, but, I think the in-season sport should probably have an issue if the kid isn't committed enough to stay for the stuff.

So if coaches let football players play other sports, or do other stuff in the off season, the school isn't serious about football??

An absolute NO!!! Coaches cannot dictate a kid, parents, families to not go on anywhere at any time, but especially when they are not in-season. I can understand a coach saying something like this during the season. Each coach can deal with that at their own discretion. But, telling anybody they CANNOT go....

Are you kidding me?

You can't even tell kids (by KHSAA rules) that they have to be at off-season. Nothing is actually REQUIRED until the start of that sport's official practice date. Now a coach can decide to "cut" anybody after that date.

They can't tell you not to go BUT they can say "We are having practice and/or a game that week and if you skip it to go on vacation you are off the team."

A coach should make that clear before the season starts though.

As a coach, I cannot force a player to not go on spring break. The AD or Principal cannot for a player to not go on spring break. It is the parents decision on whether or not to allow their child to go on spring break. I don't see this as "cutting out on their team". Football is not in season. This is not the coaches decision. If parents want their child to go with them or allow them to go on their own, that's their prerogative. They shouldn't be punished for it.
