Better have a second ace defender against Taylor. Sloan can beat you off the dribble or from outside.

 

Isaiah Garrison. Not as good of a defender as Pig Williams, it guarded one of 2018s top players in Kezo Brown last summer. If Garrison and Pig step up and play the defense I know they can, Mason by 6.

Isiah Garrison would probably draw the Sloan assignment if Pig checks Goodin. Garrison is a solid young player (sophomore) who has had a nice season, but containing Sloan will be a tough task.

 

He probably won't start, but I like Leevi Dunaway as a defender. I thought he did a really good job in the Augusta game against Crawford. He really bothered him. So Mason might be able to match up that way.

Agree that Sloan will be very problematic. Several posts have referred to speed of Taylor guard pair, hard to imagine any team speed being faster than Paris Greyhounds which Mason neutralized with their zone defense last 3 qtrs. Formula worked because Paris did not have a season-long shooter like Sloan. Despite Xavier D1 signee Goodin, IMO Pig will hold his own when he has that assignment. Sloan is Mason's match-up challenge and Garrison will have his hands more than full.

Yeah, I like Dudley from a personal standpoint. But he's Dudley, and a guy with the track record of Dudley attracts a lot of attention. As a Taylor Co. supporter, surely you recognize that.

Without a doubt! I personally am not a big Dudley fan. 9-13 in his first two years isn't looking promising. At the banquet after the season he told me that these past two years (2014-15) were supposed to be the "up" years. That doesn't bode well for next year. My beef was that the mountain guys were bashing Taylor for no other reason than their dislike for Dudley. I hated it for the kids out there working their tail off only to be disparaged because a coach they had no say in his hiring isn't well liked. Well enough about Duds, it's state tourney time!

Sloan very badly wanted to take over the game against Bardstown but wasn't getting the calls on his drives. I would expect him to assert himself a few times v. Mason Co.

 

An earlier poster seemed to imply that Mason would be in for a long night because at the state tourney, the officials would take care of Goodin. They must have missed the 5th region tournament. It got so bad more than a few were wondering if one specific official would collect two checks after the game, one from the region and the other from Bardstown lol. The irony there is that Gatewood claimed the officials were "his boys from the 6th." With friends like that lol

You may be on to something. I don't feel like Mason should win a close one but yesterday one the Taylor players told me this would be the hardest game for TC. He said one of the problems earlier this year was that they would play to the level of their competition. If they do that it would be a close game. Gatewood has worked hard in the second half of the season to have the team maintain a go for the jugular mentality. If the right team shows up against Mason it will definitely be an interesting game. If the wrong one for Mason shows up, it will be a long night for the Royals.

Not to turn it into a football thread, but IMO Taylor's best years in football are yet to come. The freshman and Sophomore groups (to be) are loaded, a COULD have 2 D1 level football players.

 

I doubt there is any guy in the state that would be able to stop Goodin. IMO the best way to go at him would be to make him work on the defensive end. Maybe get him in foul trouble but let him know your not gonna back down. Sloan is another guy who can get to the basket at will and is a better shooter than Goodin.

That is the dilemma for Mason. Taylor is most comfortable spreading the floor. They will even go four guards to spread the defense to open up driving lanes for both Goodin and Sloan. You press those two and both can beat you off the dribble, you double team that leaves someone open. It can be a very precarious situation.
