I think it actually might have been allowed to slide if it happened quickly. The spike was several seconds after the play and put the ref in a terrible spot. It is what it is...

Pretty sure the opposing coach only picks the FT shooter in case of an injury. In this case the sub the coach puts in shoots the FT's. The ref even came over and told the announcers that.
