EVERY School in the state could afford $1,000 to $2,000 for basketball shot clocks if it was mandated by the KHSAA. The reason every school doesn't have them in football is because they aren't mandated and it's up to the boosters or school to decide if they want to spend money on it or not. Some just decide to spend that money on something else.

 

The bigger issue would be a clock operator, but every school has people willing to do that as well just like people are willing to do the chains for free at football games.

 

So with those two issues out of the way it just comes down to do you want them or not. I like 40-45 seconds. It gives weaker teams a little time to run some clock without going into a complete stall.

If schools were serious about having consistent operators, it could be done. It's really not that hard. You can't tell me a school that has a basketball program can't find two people, between parents, coaches, players, and students to run the clock.

 

For the most part I agree but some schools have a hard time finding people to do clocks, scorebooks, etc.

 

We have 2-3 that do each but lucky we have people that want to do it. I go to some schools and they struggle to get people to do it

It's all a matter of opinion and personal preference. Games in the 30's are boring. If you're okay with that, you probably don't see a need for shot clocks. People who'd like to see higher scoring contests will be in favor.

I'm going to agree with Clyde in a post above...it's usually because a team is bad that they score in the 30's and every once in a while can set the style of play and drag another team down with them. When that happens it's the other teams responsibility to set the pace and get the bad/slower paced team to have to up their tempo. The chess match in those types of games can also be interesting to watch. I'm not one who automatically sees a 40-37 score and think the game must have just sucked. Not saying I prefer that type or style of game but they have their place.

 

On the flip side of that, there are many college games on a given night you will see in the low 50's, with a shot clock. So, if you follow the logic of needing a shot clock in high school to prevent low scoring "boring" games, one would have to conclude then that the shot clock in college needs to be shorter to prevent those kinds of games too, right? So, maybe 24 seconds like the pros?

As a big HS basketball fan, I agree, it's not broke. However, my preference would be more progressive along the lines of college & the NBA.

I think there should be a shot clock for sure. Nobody wants to watch games played in the 30's and 40's. The coaches and players would have to adjust for sure and it would create more exciting basketball IMO. Atleast a 36 sec clock.

 

Totally agree with this and is one of the main reasons I just don't go to random games even though I live right next door to the school.

Most teams that score in the 30s and 40s do so because they are not talented. Doesn't have to do with holding the ball.

I think you are overestimating the ability for every school to have a booster club or parents who can help make this happen for their schools. I'd be interested in seeing how a school like Burgin could make this happen. KHSAA can't even get every school to do something for free like enter their stats weekly. No way they could mandate getting shot clocks for every school in the state. There are too many schools struggling that can't afford new textbooks let alone paying for a shot clock.
