Shot Clock For High School

Featured Replies

Just a thought . . . What if a 35 or 40 second shot clock were implemented in the regional & state tourneys (larger facilities). Then, during the regular season the home team could opt to have it. (as long as they were consistent all year)[/QUOTE]

This is the problem with the thought...completely different scheme with a shot clock v without.

This issue is purely financial...

This makes me think of play clocks that are used in football. A lot of schools don't have them on the football fields because they can't afford them. It would be impossible to enforce without creating a logistics problem unless KHSAA paid for every school to have a shot clock. If that happened then football will want the KHSAA to pay for every football field to have a play clock on the field.

We can't even get every football field to have lights let alone play clocks.

Money and people to run them. went to a football game and the stadium had the play clocks on the field. Problem is they were not on. Went to a basketball game the other night, beautiful scoreboard with a place for all the players, points, fouls, etc. Score keeper didn't even put up who the foul was on. The cost to install the lights, horns, etc not to mention some schools can not get a volunteer or afford to run them anyway.

I would not be opposed to it, but not practical for HS at this time.

I didn't say anything about the low scores. It doesn't matter what the score is.

All good points.

South Oldham has a scoreboard like that. I can't imagine the multitasking going on there. As a scorekeeper I put up the player fouls even in the JV games. The more practice the more better and people appreciate it as well.

I coached in a Christmas tournament in New York a couple years ago and they use a 30 second shot clock. No shot clock violations ever happened. I will say the only time I can see this being a positive is in the postseason when a team would try and slow the game down and control the clock. Not a big fan of having one but I can see the pros and cons of it.

I am afraid a shot clock actually might lower scores in many instances. As Clyde suggested (post no. 15), most teams scoring in the 30's and 40's are not doing so because they are running a slow down offense, it is because they are not very good offensively. Implementing a shot clock will only make things more difficult for teams that already struggle to score.

I don't see a lot of games between the higher quality teams where I think a shot clock would make much difference. While there always are a few, I don't think the fact that those games occasionally occur justify the cost and complications a shot clock would bring.

All good points.

When I ran clock for a few games the past few years I tried to make it a point to put everything possible on the board. Got tough at times but figured that I had a job and needed to do the best I could, plus the kids and parents appreciated it I think.

Now as to that inadvertent horn I sounded once....

In terms of the nice scoreboards... If you're not going to make sure someone knows how to operate it to it's full ability, what's the point of buying that scoreboard?

A lot of Scoreboards are bought through contracts with soda companies.

Inconsistent operators...depending on the level of play, it can be any number of clock operators that just don't get enough time on the board to be good at it.

If schools were serious about having consistent operators, it could be done. It's really not that hard. You can't tell me a school that has a basketball program can't find two people, between parents, coaches, players, and students to run the clock.

I feel you there. That inadvertent horn makes you want to go crawl under a rock. :lol2: Been there before.

Agreed. I love doing it and have even done some girl's games for Boyle County when they have been in a bind and needed someone at the last minute.

I did it for several years back when I was still in high school, I loved it too. Actually wouldn't mind doing it again.
