Is the KHSAA going to move some teams up and down in football class?

Featured Replies

I just finished looking at the agenda for the Board of Control for this week and noticed some interested topics for discussion with links:

3.1. Update on Known Information, New Fayette, Floyd and Scott County Schools - Impact on other alignments

3.2. Football Alignment/Enrollment Changes

Four Grade Enrollments - Enrollment Order

Four Grade Enrollments - Alpha Order

3.3. Finalize Football Cross Bracketing 2016-2018 for 6A and other classes

Current System Travel

Intra Comparison Bracket Travel

The four grade enrollment links also have a column with an UP or DOWN in it for some teams. It makes me wonder, are these requests from members schools? Is this the KHSAA all on their own? Is the KHSAA going to be transparent with this process? Is this simply a reporting of enrollment to explore possibilities? Something else?

Schools with the Up or Down Designation from the link:

Ashland - Down

Bath County - Down

Beechwood - Up

Caldwell County - Down

Christian Academy-Louisville - Up

Conner - Down

Cooper - Down

Corbin - Up

DeSales- Up

Dixie Heights - Up

East Jessamine - Up

Edmonson County - Down

Fern Creek - Up

Greenup County - Down

Harlan County - Down

Highlands - Down (but the enrollment change doesn't match a down designation according to the chart)

Johnson Central - Up

Letcher County Central - Down

Lexington Catholic - Up

Logan County - Up

Nelson County - Down

Ohio County - Down (again enrollment change doesn't match)

Oldham County - Up

Perry County Central - Down

Rockcastle County - Down

Sheldon Clark - Down

South Warren - Up

Valley - Up

West Carter - Down

West Jessamine - Up

In addition to the Up or Down Designations from the link there are other schools that are either highlighted (with no up or down designation) and schools with big changes (like Covington Catholic for instance up 9.14%) that don't have an up or down designation. I assume in Covington Catholic's situation that is because they are already playing up. I am sure the same for some other schools or even with the noticeable percent of change the school would not qualify for a change in class because the enrollment is still within the class parameters. This is just me spitballing.

Something big is going on here. Anyone?

The KHSAA is meeting to address it, so one can only assume all the scheduling that teams have been doing for the past few months could go directly out the window. Interesting is how 2A will see Desales and CAL potentially move out and how much tougher 5A could get with South Warren moving up. Lots of interesting possible moves for the KHSAA. Even more interesting will be to see if the KHSAA will let teams move up in class or tell them to stay put.

Thanks DH78!

And everyone, I am not going to start beating up on Cooper and Conner again but I notice they both have a DOWN designation yet Conner is up 6.54% and Cooper is up 10.07%. Seems to me in those two cases the schools may be asking the KHSAA to reconsider their previous requests to move UP in class.

Very interested to see where the "up" and "down" originates from

That's a lot of big name programs you wouldn't expect to be asking to move.

Maybe we are going to a 5 Class System?

I am not a big math guy but I bet a big math guy/gal may be able to make heads or tails of it.

The UP or DOWN designation could simply be where all the teams belong given the updated enrollment figures.

And if so, could you imagine Beechwood moving up!? The wheels may come off 95 Grand Am if that happens...

After thinking about it I am very much convinced they are toying with a 5 Class System or something along those lines.

This is not schools requesting this because some of these would make absolutely zero sense.

What makes me think it is a class reduction are the teams noted as "Down" despite the enrollment numbers not matching (Highlands for example).

If a class is being eliminated it would make sense for teams playing up or teams who have contradicting enrollment trends to move. If you have an increase in enrollment but are still one of the smallest teams in your class you would still be ticketed to go "down" if a class is removed.

I think guru said it best at the end...smells like something big is about to be discussed at the very least.

I assume in Highlands case even with the additional enrollment Highlands would still qualify as 4A and not 5A meaning they get a DOWN designation on this list.

From my sources, the new Fayette County school is being put into the same football district that is currently Scott Co., Dunbar, Henry Clay & Bryan Station. Kinda shocked that this school wont begin in 5A & swing up when they increase enrollment.

If i was a betting man, I would say they are going into the 42nd in everything else to make that a 5 team district(just an obvious observation), BUT then what do we do with the new Scott Co. high school when they begin fielding athletic teams?????......I could possibly see a restructuring of some surrounding regions to retrofit some of the 11th region teams into those surrounding regions, but I could be wrong.

just my 2 cents

Exactly my logic

Interesting, Ashland would have to compete with Belfry in 3A instead of Johnson Central, which would move from 4A to 5A

That is bad news for Ashland but I want to be careful not to get this thread off course.

Understood, but I wouldn't say that it is "bad news" for Ashland, only the drive. :) I will say that for us to compete, we need to restructure our defense and have the ability to spread the ball around more on offence. Just because it's on the agenda, does it mean that it's a done deal?

BGHS is licking its chops looking at one of those Up/Down moves and I ain't talking about Highlands.
