January 12, 201610 yr So I am still waiting for an explanation about how come religious folk, when talking about issues in the "state of the planet" seem to ONLY care about lgbt rights. (edit: this isn't the only issue listed, but the only religious issue) You guys better hope I am right about there being no god or jesus. Cause if there is, he is gonna be plenty mad at what is being passed off as being in his name. You guys are a strange bunch of christians when the atheist invokes the words of jesus more than the rest combined. =shrugs= Maybe picking on gay people will be enough to get you into heaven.
January 12, 201610 yr Does it appear to others, or is it just me,that maybe our problems inside and outside the country are religious based according to this thread? Yep.
January 12, 201610 yr I think Jesus took a different position with respect to the applicability of the law; I stand ready to be corrected. The nt provisions you reference are not as clear, and none of them are attributed to jesus. Of course, it's all made up anyway imo. I would say that Jesus made the law harder than it was in the Old Testament. At least that's the conclusion I reach after reading his Sermon on the Mount. To my knowledge, Jesus never directly addressed the issue of homosexuality or gay marriage. But I believe he did so indirectly when he was asked about marriage & divorce. Jesus quoted Genesis 3 word for word when discussing what marriage is. And Genesis 3 informs us that marriage is a relationship between a man and woman who leave their parents, are united together, and then become one flesh. It would seem to me that if Jesus wanted to broaden the definition of marriage, he would have done so.
January 12, 201610 yr to Randy above. Yeah, but you left out the last part of the verse, or passage. That's the one about "let no man tear assunder." A big big stretch to go from a Jesus prohibition against divorce, (which you all ignore lol) and turn it into a prohibition on gay people. I recall a verse where Jesus said he did not come to change the law, and said expressly that the law remained the same. So unless I am proven wrong, I think you are missing the mark there, and it's time to give up the shellfish.
January 12, 201610 yr The shellfish/clothing issue you brought up...those are part of an Old Testament Jewish moral code (for lack of a better phrase) that is no longer binding. With regard to homosexuality, the New Testament does repeat the command that it is sinful. found the passage: Jesus Fulfills the Law 17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
January 12, 201610 yr Christians are generous and loving. Are there some who take it to the extreme, yes, but I believe they are a minority. As for an issue as homosexuality, one should love all of God's children. At the same time they need to point out when someone is not following the word of God.

Jesus quoted Genesis 3,in great part, to highlight the intended permanence of marriage. As to your second comment, Jesus said he didn't come to abolish the law but instead to fulfill it. That's what he did. Having said all of that, here's my take when people play the "Jesus didn't say anything about homosexuality" card. I don't think it matters. If Jesus had said, "You shall not have sex with someone of the same sex" that's not going to change the opinions of people on iota. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but it's what I believe.

I mean, he purportedly said a lot of stuff, and no one pays attention to it. I did not mean to imply that you were ignoring the divorce prohibition, but that christians as a group ignore it. along with every other group.

I did not mean to imply that you were ignoring the divorce prohibition, but that christians as a group ignore it. along with every other group. I dont ignore the divorce teachings. Jesus himself said: “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” Adultery is a sin too. In that you are 100% correct. But notice Jesus himself specifically says "and marries another woman". Think about that....And the Bible says he was talking to the Pharisees which were all male.
January 12, 201610 yr but that christians as a group ignore it. Ignore might be a strong word, but I'll grant that Christians tend to highlight the sin of homosexuality with more ferocity and frequency than they do other sins of a sexual nature. Hard to rail against gay marriage when the divorce rate among Christians is as high as that of non-Christians.
January 12, 201610 yr Author Ignore might be a strong word, but I'll grant that Christians tend to highlight the sin of homosexuality with more ferocity and frequency than they do other sins of a sexual nature. And this is right. I am sometimes guilty of that. And I am wrong for highlighting one over another. Its just this has been such a huge issue is why I included it.
January 12, 201610 yr And this is right. I am sometimes guilty of that. And I am wrong for highlighting one over another. Its just this has been such a huge issue is why I included it. A huge issue to some. A non-issue to some. I for one wouldn't call it a "state of planet Earth" issue. But as I have often said, it would be a mighty boring place if everybody walked alike and talked alike and thought alike.
