December 20, 201510 yr Some really intelligent baseball fans in here being pretty and childish and saying just ridiculous things about this. Get a grip. He's earned his 10&5 rights and I applaud him for exercising that right. I would do the same thing. His family comes above winning. He has earned the right and good for him for using it. He now has earned the right to accept what maybe coming to him from his current team and the fan base now that he has let his greed and ego hamper the team.
December 20, 201510 yr Not being childish at all. I said he has earned that right. If I'm Reds management I still bench him though, and play the guy we traded for.You know I respect you and your opinion, that's just silly though.
December 20, 201510 yr You know I respect you and your opinion' date=' that's just silly though.[/quote'] Why is it silly? Phillips is obviously not part of the rebuilding plan. Should they just let Deraza rot in the bench or in the minors, or should they give him his shot and see if he is what they think he is capable of being? That' is what I tell Phillips if I'm Reds management. I'd make him think real hard about wanting to stay in Cincinnati.

I'm a Pirates fan, so no dog in this fight. Heard Phillips lives in this area and is now comfortable, that's why he vetoed trade. Reds should call his agent, tell him he WILL NOT PLAY this season except in an emergency, and let him whine if he wants. Also, are they trying to trade Votto? His contract is not much more expensive than some of the others signed this past week by other teams. If he vetoes trade, sit him on the bench just like Phillips. December 20, 201510 yr In this instance it is about him. He has earned that right. He has earned the right to collect his money, sit on the bench, and watch them rebuild. But the team has earned the right to just release him (and eat his contract) if they wish. Phillips is only about money, nothing else. He cried like a baby after Votto signed bigger deal. Let him sit.

December 20, 201510 yr This is really interesting. I cannot see BP at spring training this year. It would just be a mess. I don't blame BP for using his leverage but I don't blame the Reds for using the only leverage they have - benching him. For those saying that he has to watch out for his family, give me a break. He will make about $100 million playing baseball. I think his family will be just fine whether he squeezes the Reds for a few more million or not.
December 20, 201510 yr You guys are real funny. Cincinnati is so quick to turn that backs on their professional athletes. It's sad actually. BP will STILL be a fan favorite and will STILL start at 2nd and will STILL get paid. Just because the Reds want to rebuild doesn't mean that BP has to just agree to a trade because thats what the Reds want. I'm glad he vetoed it. But, whatever, carry on...

I like BP. I would have had no problem with him staying this year. I just think it will be ugly between him and the Reds management now. We will see what they do. If they do truly want to go with an overhaul and youth movement, the young guys have to play though. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Same boat as BP.
December 20, 201510 yr So if he's not traded he will be getting the same amount of money and only win 60 games. I don't know why he wouldn't want to get paid the same if he had the oppurtunity to win 100.

December 20, 201510 yr Apparently it wasn't about the Reds not paying Brandon to waive the no-trade clause. Phillips was seeking an extension in order to green-light the deal, and the Nationals were unwilling to give him one.
December 20, 201510 yr Votto needs to go too then. Why keep Votto? Same boat as BP. Teams to take Votto contract is very, very limited. And he has a full no trade clause also.
December 20, 201510 yr Teams to take Votto contract is very, very limited. And he has a full no trade clause also. That's my point. Everybody is complaining because BP nixed the trade offer. Now everybody is calling for him to benched. They are completely rebuilding and BP should leave is there reasoning. But why should Votto be exempt?
