I saw this... How hilariously awesome. He's not wrong, though IMO!

I watched this a couple of times trying to understand how they thought Herm Edwards was going too far. He's right. Today's professional players could care less how the team fares as long as they get their air time. The JOB that they are being EMPLOYED to do is getting lost in their personal expression or they don't think they are being treated fairly. If they spent as much time during the week preparing for the game, as they do planning their wardrobe or their celebration dance maybe the NFC East would not have mediocre records for the year. Edwards is 100% correct.

It's not that I don't agree with him but the game has changed in the last few years let alone when Herman played and even coached. I don't think he is wrong but the desire for as much information as possible, ESPN(ironically his network) constantly searching for the TMZ-type story along with social media and easier fan access to the athletes it has created this environment he detests. It always cracks me up when dudes who work for the media complain about the media and its effects on things.

 

I get his passion around respecting the game but his employer doesn't respect the game. Pot meet kettle.

Herm Edwards is absolutely 1000% correct. Pro sports is all about the individual and how much attention "I" can get and the media DOES embellish these kinds of things but there are a lot of players that are more concerned with themselves than the team. It only takes a couple of bad apples on a team in a "team" sport to upset the cart, ie., Terrell Owens and Chad Johnson. That was one of the happiest days for me as a Bengals fans when those clowns were gone. Don't get me wrong I loved both when they were at the prime of their careers but those 2 years they were together here were brutal from a fan's standpoint and Chad got out of hand before that with his "I" mentality.

Love what he said. Absolutely love it. Professional sports are filled with divas today, who are more concerned about marketing their "brand" and making a name for themselves than they are with their teams success.

 

That being said, professional sports have always had people with larger than life egos. Social media, 24 hour news and other media outlets have just given these professional athletes a venue to maintain public visibility. I am sure there are more professional "idiots" that spout off today than in previous decades as a result of the varying media outlets, but the egos have always existed to some extent(Remember the Boz)

I'm sure there were more before him and after but he is the one that sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Anybody remember some of the Antics he would pull off the field? I think there are plenty that you could include in that, but he definitely jumps out. However, if you're looking for someone who started it, you'd have to look earlier than that, like Chris Carter.

Absolutely. And part of his job I to discuss the topics presented t him, not get all wound up and say he would walk off if he weren't being paid to be there. He would not have taken issue with Shady saying he was having Chip over for Christmas, so why should he be upset about what he actually said?

 

I realize there are holes in my logic, and I do agree with Herm that ESPN has gotten away from talking sports. But I don't see reason for him to be so fired up about this, considering he knew what type of organization he signed up to work for. The same organization knew people would be having this discussion, which is why the topic was brought up on air. And here we are, doing exactly what we're supposed to do.

Herm is not a media guy, he is a football guy. ESPN hired an old school football guy to discuss FOOTBALL. If ESPN don't like it they can fire him. They have too many reporters getting their information from TMZ. How about ESPN getting back to professional sports journalism. I'd prefer to see that. Herm is totally right.

 

Johnny Football had to get spanked by players from the opposing team last year and by the coach this year. He got benched because he is all about Johnny, not the team. Old school coach don't put up with that. Coach Pettine said, "3rd String bench warmer!"

 

I think Coach Pettine and Coach Edwards are going to be sharing time on the same sports program next year (if you catch my drift).
