Belfry vs. Newport Central Catholic

Featured Replies

You are saying Belfry wont have speed based on past history of Belfry? You must not know a whole lot about Belfry football. There has also been a lot of teams who have said that Belfry is "One Dimensional" well you can ask anyone who has played against Belfry, they may be a running team, and you may know what they are going to do but try and stop it. Thats what Haywood does, its called smashmouth football, and the Pirates won't back down from NCC. I am not going to guarantee a Belfry win by any means, they are traditonally slow starting team but I am pretty much going to tell you that NCC will not stuff Belfry's running game! I can't wait til tommorow night!

Make sure you don't disappear for a week when the beloved Pirates finish with 87 yards total offense.

And if Belfry wins, you will be .... where?

I can eat crow with the best of them, But ask the Aces of O'cath and The Red Devils of Russell.. you might know what the Pirates are doing and you might stack the box.. but I highly doubt a team is going to shut down Belfry's run, I am not saying Belfry is invincible, Russell beat us last year, but they didn't hold the Pirates down either and neither do I think NCC will.

Belfry can be "stuffed." Breathitt Co. did it in 2002.

If NCC can force Belfry into 3 and 5 or longer then it will be a long night for the Pirates.

Does NCC have a reputation for physical play?

87 yards? I would be my debt double or nothing against that proposition. There is a defense that plays best against the Pirates tho, and many teams fail to recognize the scheme.

I for one am hoping NCC plays D the way I think they might.

NCC is going to line up in a 44 (vast majority) or a 43 front.

Last year, prevent was 35 (which is 3/3/5 aka nickel)

They are pretty big up front. Some people would say that are really aggressive. That would be very true against the run the past few years. But--there are a few teams that have been able to run against them.

I am going to try and stay away from using a scrimmage to gauge their progress this year (unless I feel like it will translate to the season).

How have the Beechies beat them in the past? Throwing? Running? Balance?

I have heard stories of the Beechie "outcoaching" NCC in the past. Hard to believe with the accolades of the coach at NCC.

Most people did not think they could stop Mayfield's running game either. Most people did not think they could stop Bellevue's running game,But they did and they made both of them Start trying to pass because they could not run.

I never said it wasn't possible, I said that I doubted they could, In years past teams have said Belfry is one dimensional and that they could stop them, well Belfry threw like 3 pass plays in the state championship game and gained like 500 yards on the ground. This year could be totally different, but I just dont see any team holding Belfry to 87 yards of total offense like "free thinker" thinks NCC will do..

I agree... just saying... it can be done. It has been done in the past.

BUT... VERY rarely

I'd rather give up 487 yards and 1 TD than 87 yards and 3 TDs.;)

Better players?

(Unless somehow NCC coaches suddenly got real intelligent in the last 8 games)

To expand on my last post. Nobody would say OC, Lloyd 03', Russell 04', or Pburg 03',04' were poor run defense teams.

That being said. There is some ground on which to make a claim THIS Pirate team can be stopped. It is game 1 and they have not proven any ability to move the ball thus far this season. Still 87 yds? Ludlow will rush for that against the Breds.

Better player for Beechwood? Okay...

I just hadn't inferred that from the past 2 or three seasons... I have always seen an "even" matchup with some evidence (thru posters) that Beechwood won in the headset.

I doubt Ludlow will, but one thing i do know ludlow did not stop NCC in 03.As a matter of fact NCC beat Lloyd by more tham 40 points and did it by running with Kevin Smith.
