Not a bad showing by the tiny school from Augusta.

Wow! Augusta was down by 18 at one point, this region is wide open.

Is Augusta this good or did Campbell just play poorly? Or a combination of both. Great game and confidence boost for the Panthers.

Combo of both. After 1 quarter it was 13-1. I will be hearing whistles in my sleep. :no:

 

Kiddos to Augusta for not giving up and fighting till the end. Their a scrappy bunch and will be in the hunt again this year.

Matt Wilson was getting worked over in the post all night. He played well but the Augusta game plan was to try and wear him down.

 

It got nasty down low. Some of it called and some of it let go. If it was a pickup game at the park someone may have been arrested for felonious assault with the roughness of the game. Very physical.

 

Heygi had a nice game and kept the Camels in it. He is becoming a nice scorer for Campbell.

 

What I take from the first week of hoops is the region as a whole is wide open. With all the good games we have had Its not so clear cut as to who the top teams are. I still think Campbell and MoCo are 1-2, but I'm putting MoCo at the 1 spot and Campbell at the 2. With 3-8 not too far behind. It's gonna be a wild season in the 10th this yr

Snapp battled foul trouble all night for Augusta. Maddox had a good game, as did Pugh. I was impressed with big man Cordle. He played big minutes tonight scored a few points and played solid defense on Wilson not giving him many easy opportunities.

These are a few of the whistles that were worn out tonight. 3's kept Augusta in the game. As stated, Hegyi is playing well, and Wilson is getting a MMA belt, playing strong though.

I'm glad we were able to catch this one on the way back from the Bellarmine game. It was very tough and physical down low but our smaller kids held their own aginst superior size. Wilson earned every basket he got tonight. Heygi stepped up down the stretch and made some nice baskets in tge final minutes. Augusta uncharacteristically missed a few FT in the last 3 minutes and that was probably the difference in the game. Augusta got big minutes from Jack Laycock & Steve Cordle playing Wilson in the post that won't show up on the stat sheet. I can guarantee you one thing......Augusta getting beat by 3 by the #1 preseason rated team isn't something they'll be satisfied with.....our kids "expect to win".....this will only motivate them to work harder. I keep saying it, but we have 100 kids in HS and for the past 5 years their " family" confidence makes them respectful of their opponents but afraid of no one.

Hard to believe that they were down 13-1 after one quarter and didn't even hit a field goal until about halfway through the 2nd quarter! Campbell just could not pull away because the Panthers just kept fighting. Trailing 31-24 at the half Augusta would lose Camryn Snapp just 30 seconds into the 3rd quarter as he picked up his 3rd and 4th fouls. Campbell County took advantage of his absence to the tune of an 18 point lead. But once again the Panthers came storming back. Much credit goes to Jack Laycock and Stephen Cordle for the work they did down low on Matt Wilson. They couldn't always stop him but he knew they were there. And we are talking about two guys with very minimal varsity experience working against the region's top player. Once again in pressure situations the Panthers handled the ball well and fought through adversity but just fell a bit short. I think Augusta proved a lot tonight. Trust me, through the years there haven't been many Panther teams that take the floor every night, no matter who the opponent, and believe they should win. This is such a team. If you get the chance to see these boys in action make the trip. It is very early but I think we are on the brink of something very special.
