So why was Beechwood ranked # 1 all year?

They weren't Paintsville was..

So why was Beechwood ranked # 1 all year?

I think literally every single week the rankings were published there was a comment from someone at BGP stating the difference between Beechwood-Paintsville-Pikeville was so negligible that any of the three could be #1.

I do remember you knocking down Beechwood every Monday afternoon for being ranked #1, even though their only loss was in a rivalry game to a ranked 5A school. Pikeville had a similar resume, with their only losses coming in a rivalry game to a ranked 3A school and another to a 1A school on a two-point conversion - a team that was ranked ahead of them because of that.

Bottom line, you've spent the entire year trumpeting Paintsville as the #1 team in the state as an obvious when the numbers didn't bear it out. It took until the last game to prove who was the best team in 1A and it was proven by one of the teams which was considered to be among the best to begin with.

Beechwood was ranked #1 on the BGP polls all year. I felt Paintsville had the best resume thru the season and Pikeville was right behind them along with Beechwood.. I never thought Beechwood would dominate the class and win the title going away.. There were several posters on here that did think that.. I thought they had a shot to win it all, but, no more so than the other 2 above or even Russellville.. I thought it would be competitive either way and it was..

Wow! I thought Beechwood was a huge favorite

I will chime in on this. First let me say Pikeville has a very strong team and very good players, they deserved to win last night. I had never seen them play but just watching them warm up i knew Beechwood would have hands full. I looked at my wife and said this would be tough. Main reason was Beechwood was without stringer and The FB and linebacker Sowards. You take Pugh and Charles off Pikeville and Beechwood probably wins. On another note, Braydon Combs decided not to play this year. He goes about 6'4 250 and was a two way starter last year. He is a big time baseball player and has a full ride to UK. So to take nothing away from Pikeville, if Beechwood is at full strength, they probably win. Also, Beechwood had momentum in the 3rd and if they stop Pikeville on that 3rd and long that went for 60 and a TD, they still may have won. beechwood had all of the momentum and Pikeville was flat at that point but that changed the game. Congrats to Pikeville. Beechwood will be back.

WTG Pikeville, knew the state championship game was played last week.

Sure you did. Looks like about 12 hours after the SC ended you knew that. Impressive.

True. Pikeville will lose Daric Pugh to graduation, but what I saw out Blake Charles in this game was more impressive than I've seen all season. Noticed where coaching staff utilized him more in the running game the last few contests. Reminds me a lot of the Hatfield RB at Belfry last season.

As a Beechwood fan I was sad to see them lose but happy that they got to the final and showed some fight when they were down early. Pikeville has a nice team and even nicer fans that are even happier and I tip my hat to you. As the curtain closes on another season I think the happiest person of all is Plantmanky knowing that Beechwood lost. Dude really seems to have an edge about the Tigers.

Come on, please. Blaming a loss on injuries is bad enough, but, then throwing in a kid who's not even on the team is worse. Every school has good athletes roaming the halls that could be playing and doing really well, but, opted to not play for whatever reason. Also, it's the 15th game of the season. You don't think Pikeville had some injuries, nics, bangs and bruises and not everyone playing at 100%. In 1 breath, you say take nothing away from Pikeville, then in the next you say had we been healthy, we likely win. Weather meant or not, that's exactly what you did, you took credit away from the Panthers. I know you were trying to be politically correct, but, honestly, you took credit away and layed blame instead of giving them the credit they deserved.

the first 2 of those 7 Mayfield was a significantly better team, the 3rd was one play/call away from a bw win, and the other 4 the offense has been steered by a qb who panics when one little thing doesn't go "according to plan". BW just hasn't been the best team in 1A in those matchups, because the opponent they were playing was. (except for Frankfort that one year. idk how that happened). The best team has been winning, that team just has not been Beechwood.

The QB that has thrown for 7000 yards, 100 TD's and 450 completions "panics". I think you were watching the wrong team.

I will respond to the notion of the QB panicking only because I overheard the same thing at the game Thursday night. I can see the perception of panic because of the timing of specific interceptions where the ball seemed forced and was ill advised. Last year's Mayfield game and the interception deep in Pikeville territory were very similar and all were drive killers and possible game changers. Because this QB is so very accurate and has thrown very few interceptions the picks in big games are magnified and come under more scrutiny. Give some credit to the Mayfield and Pikeville defenses though. What was available with other defenses was not available in these games. You cannot expect a teenager to make the same reads as a seasoned veteran that does this for a living.......and still makes misreads. Instead of labeling this young man as a "panic" QB why don't we marvel at what he has done for 3 plus years? Lest we not forget these are just kids that we are posting about.

The QB mistakes that occur in any game are magnified because of the impact they have during a game. Kyle Fieger didnt play his best game and Im sure he would be the first to admit that....but I gaurentee you that his team mates would say the same thing and shoulder the blame. This group of seniors played thier butts off for 4 years... They erned the right to play in this game and came up short....This was a TEAM loss not an individual loss.

These seniors will not make excuses. Every team is nicked up this time of year. Not having your starting backfield and two thirds of your linebackers is part of it. Improvise adapt and overcome. Unfortunately these kids fell short.

"IF"

If, ifs ands & buts were candy and nuts. We would all have a merry Christmas.
