Wow, what a game, Desales defense looked like something you would see on Saturdays for sure, just huge kids, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, 87 and 78, those kids were freaks of nature. I have to give credit to the mayfield coaching staff for the 2qtr thru the rest of the game for the schemes and the Mayfield kids for wearing out the colts defense. It seemed Desales put everything they had into that first qtr and then the wheels fell off. After the 1st qtr I honestly thought it was gonna get ugly and our only way to pull this game off was to go to the air but Mayfield starting opening holes for Bright and he was hitting those holes quick and fast. Mayfield truly is tough at home, that tradition just keeps continuing. GO CARDS!!

As I have said for the last umpteen years on this same night...It s great to be a Mayfield Cardinal!

Watched DeSales and didn't think the would be as strong as they were but man they brought it. Great team and great fans, safe travels home and hope to see you next year. #5 for DeSales was a beast and I had the pleasure of getting to talk with his dad, class act. In fact, gotta hand it to all of all the DS players and fans as I didn't see anybody that was anything but first class.

Props to your son, heck of an athlete. Congratulations to DeSales, great year, as much as I love winning it was hard to watch those young men at DeSales go down with a loss. But, they showed class in losing, as well as your coaches and fans did to. You have an awesome program and you got my respect!

It is funny how once teams actually play Mayfield they find out that maybe they aren't as great as once perceived. Seems every few years a new team or two find that out in an up close and personal basis. That's OK, it always makes for great banter leading up to a game.

You gotta hand it to Mayfield. The Cards beat two excellent opponents in OCath and Desales. That's a tough road right there.

They have definetly earned it. The West in 2-A was a tough road. THE SEC WEST! PERIOD anyone that disagrees is crazy.

With all the kudos to Mayfield's coaching staff, how long has the bulk of the staff been together? What makes them such a good staff?

With all the kudos to Mayfield's coaching staff, how long has the bulk of the staff been together? What makes them such a good staff?

 

It begins with the head coach. Coach Joe, the son of a Hall of Fame coach, Jack Morris, who many of us old timers on this board played for. So Joe has not only been around the game his entire life, but has been around Mayfield Football his entire life and it means as much to him as it does to any fan or player. He is also smart in that he surrounds himself with other great coaches, most of whom will eventually be successful HCs in their own right. I'll be the first to admit that I didn't know if Joe could live up to the reputation his Dad had built, but will also be the first to admit how wrong I was. He is an OUTSTANDING coach and future hall of fame inductee just like his Father.

You also have to consider the fact that even our elementary football program is considered part of the coaching staff and has been coaching our little league program for decades. We start em young and bring em up in the system playing alongside the same boys they will play with until they graduate. It builds a bond and level of trust that cannot be understated.

Thwart a great passing attack one week and then stuff an amazing ground game the next. Takes a very special defense to handle those two high-powered offenses that come at you in such contrasting styles.

One last thing, I will also say that I was not sure who would replace Beechwood on our schedule. The Beechies are a team and fan base we have grown to respect very much. I think we have found that in Desales. Very classy program and we look forward to many more wars with you in the coming years.

Congrats to Mayfield. The fans I met before the game, and after the game were great. Couldn't have asked for a better atmosphere for a football game. As someone said earlier, some of our play calls were just head scratchers. We had success running the football in the first, Mayfield made the adjustment by with their inside backers moving up , to help, or on most plays were bringing pressure. The middle of the field was open! I can't for the life of me understand why more high school football teams don't utilize a tight end. It's almost a forgotten position in high school football. The kids on both side showed heart, character, and class. For a game this big, I saw no jawing, no activity after plays, I saw them pat each other on the helmets, and just good sportsmanship. I can see this turning into a very good rivalry. Hopefully next year, we can return the favor at our new facility. Good luck next week!
