With all the kudos to Mayfield's coaching staff, how long has the bulk of the staff been together? What makes them such a good staff?

 

Coach Morris knows football and I have a 'Joe knows football' t-shirt to prove it. As many have already said, he's as good at in-game adjustments as any in the business. The entire staff does an amazing job, but i'll point out 4 assistants. DC Dew is a defensive genius and does a great job with his schemes every week. Our kids are always prepared for what the opposing offense will bring and are rarely, if ever, out of position. John Ferris and Todd Hatchell take care of our OL and they do an awesome job teaching technique and fundamentals. What they have gotten out of our young, undersized OL this year is a testimate to how great they can coach. Finally, Chris Champion works with the DL, but his greatest contribution is the work he does as strength and conditioning coordinator. When our boys still have gas in the tank late in the 4th, it is owed to Champ. Mostly what makes our staff great is hard work and hours spent. It's rare to drive by our facility and not see coaches parked there, nights and weekends included. Sorry this was so long, but MF has an incredible staff and they deserve their props. Our kids are blessed to play for them and I wouldn't want my son playing anywhere else.

Well done Cardinals. I must admit, I had some doubts about what would happen when Mayfield faced DeSales. DeSales seemed to have their own dynasty in the making and 90 players or so on the sideline of a 2A school is a statement itself. But Mayfield proves once again they are a team that can contend with anyone.

 

Selfishly, I love seeing Mayfield win this one. All those people who questioned Beechwood now know that there is nothing wrong at Beechwood, they just had an incredible obstacle in their path over the past 6 years. I have no doubt that Beechwood would have at least two more titles if they could have beaten Mayfield and this game helps prove that point.

 

Congratulations again Cardinals on a great win. Good luck next week. The Cardinals are a big favorite in my opinion but Mayfield knows that a huge semifinal win over a top opponent does not get you a state title. You will have to earn that against another tough opponent with their own legacy of title game trips.

I get it, that's funny right there!

You also have to consider the fact that even our elementary football program is considered part of the coaching staff and has been coaching our little league program for decades. We start em young and bring em up in the system playing alongside the same boys they will play with until they graduate. It builds a bond and level of trust that cannot be understated.

 

This is how small schools have to do it to compete and nobody does it better than Mayfield football

I have always been proud of MF for taking on just about anyone! Public, private, big or small and never making excuses if there is a slip up. I found it entertaining when so many doubted the Cards ability to move up and expected the result we have now. It has always been that way during my lifetime and it has made it fun to get so deeply involved. A lot of people do that here where most places only have that passion for college teams. We will not win them all but I will be surprised if we don't always get more than our share in whatever class we find ourselves. We have been very lucky to find all the component's it takes to have a great program from the administration to extremely good coaches and community support.

Yeah I have to agree. Their workouts rutines are insane. I just so happen to workout in the facility one day and I watch half of the rutines. Champ has those boys working non-stop. He even joins in with the boys.

How can a school only have 300 boys and 100 of them play football? That's an unheard of number.. Even the most tradition rich programs aren't close to that %.. Trinity has 1300 boys and 200 play football, Highlands has 400 boys and 80 play football, Mayfield has 200 boys and 50 play.. Male has 100 but they also have 700 boys.. Just curious, is there a clause in your qualifications that state you must be a great athlete or play football to attend..
