Maybe I was clueless. 40 seconds. According to ESPN, the pass play happened with 1:13 left. A running play would have taken 3 seconds off the clock. 1:10, ball set at 1:08 run it down to :27. Kick takes 5 seconds, 22 seconds left. You may be correct. I also look at it as the a field goal is not guaranteed, and if I can put my team in better position throwing to a top 5 receiver, I don't mind it. It didn't work, they lost, so be it. Playoffs it is a different story.

Just a fade route in general is not a high percentage throw in terms of a completion. The other side of the field they were playing 10 yards off the receivers. Could have easily pulled the handoff and threw the quick hitch for a first down.

Not to mention the whole 3rd quarter he had about a third of the field to work with due to being flushed out of the pocket on about 6 straight throws.

 

This was one of my biggest disappointments in last night's game. Arizona was blitzing on every play and the Bengals/Dalton could not figure out how to respond.

 

The Bengals also need to find a running game. I like Hue's creativity but he is a little too tricky and not enough straight at them for me.

Worst end of game defense I've seen in a while, even from the Bengals.

Hill actually has alot of shiftiness to his game. A lot of his big runs came when he made people miss. This year he isn't making people miss and the holes he had to run through is a lot smaller and also its a different style of run plays they are running this year. He was at his best getting 20 to 25 carries a game and being in the majority of the game and not every other series or two.

When it's 3rd & 2 in that situation, Tom Brady makes that pass. You Andy Dalton are not Tom Brady. You don't need that play. You have a good team around you Andy. Manage the game and don't screw it up.

Clueless, yep, or I see it differently than you. What happens if he completes the pass? They get 4 more downs and the potential to win the game with a TD. If he runs the ball, they aren't getting the first. There is 1:10 left w/ 25 seconds run off to kick the field goal. That give AZ 40 sec to get into field goal range to win the game. W/ the way that the secondary was already shredded w/ injuries and the fact that Kirkpatrick is awful, we still would be looking at what we got last night. All that would have been eliminated if the Bengals run the ball is the necessity for Palmer to kneel the ball to run more of the clock off.

 

This is easy to say now that I've seen the replay dozens of times, but if he hands it off not only is it a first down it may have been a TD. There was a huge hole and the receivers all had one on one blocks to make to spring it. I think he would have needed to make one guy miss.

 

That being said the worst case scenario of handing it off or throwing a deep out made it clear as day Andy made the wrong decision. It is actually fairly simple.

It's just difficult to watch a really talented team get beat because the coaching is so freeking pathetic.

Even if Andy made the decision there... It's still on Marvin. In that situation he has to tell Hue to tell Andy "Run the ball here. I don't care what you see. We're going to run clock and hope for a first down running... That's still on coaches that have been around longer than Andy and company... Andy has a lot more freedom this year which is why the offense and he have been better IMO, but he can and should be overruled at times. This is one of those times.

Why all the Marvin talk and not Hue? Yeah Marvin blew it too, but I am under the assumption Marvin trusts Hue and lets him make the play calls. Also, it is pretty clear that it was a run call and Andy read the man to man press coverage and chose to throw it. It's on all 3 of them.

It is on all 3, but in this order.. Marvin, Hue, Andy... That's the hierarchy. Hue over rules Andy and Marvin overrules Hue... And if Andy made that last decision, it should've been made clear to him that they are to run the ball in that situation.

All this being said, the offense did its job last night... The defense didn't even slow the Cards down with under a minute left... Again, Marvin should overrule the D coordinator and call for some blitzing...

 

Defense did it's job against the Texans and offense did it's job last night. They just need to put it together if they wanna win in the post season. They're players are good enough to, we'll see.

The Bengals have been a top 10 defense over the years and even the top scoring defense in the NFL this year by relying on their front four. They quite honestly are not that good of a blitzing teams, and the few times they do they usually get burnt. Just like last week against Houston when they got burnt twice on third and long on blitzes.

 

I have no problem with them blitzing, but I think they should have stayed with their normal base pass coverage instead of prevent. The Bengals normal base pass defense has two safeties high and people usually can't get over the top of them, even though the Cardinals did earlier on a blown coverage. The bengals playing so far off, made it to easy for Palmer to throw his deep in cut, deep out, etc.
