Shout Out To the 3-Sport Athletes

Off the top of my head, there are three seniors at Ludlow who have played 3 sports their entire high school career: Matthew Gibson, Michael Camerena and Nathan Wyrick. All three play football, basketball and baseball.

Bryce Ashley lettered in 3 Sports by the middle of his sophomore year @ Ryle. Football, Basketball and Track.

Braden Brown- West Carter

Football, Track and Basketball also a good baseball player but decided to focus on track as he will contend for State Championships in the 100m and 200m.

Owen Finke with Covington Holy Cross. Varsity football middle linebacker and big contributor for the defense. Top 15 in the state for Diving Freshman year, 13th Sophmore year. Center fielder in baseball with a great swing.

Collin Portman from North Oldham can play any sport he decides to try. Proud of the man he's become. When his younger brother came to live with us at 4 months Collin said he could have his room. He gets up early on school days and helps get his special needs brother ready for school. He puts him on the bus and then gets ready for school. Then goes to practice after school comes home does homework and then starts over again. Also works part time job. Never complains because he knows playing sports is a privilege.

Owen finke (jr) Covington Holy cross. Starting Linebacker in football, diving, and baseball.

I would think that he is the first LB/Diver combo athlete in recent NKY history. Those two don't exactly scream complimentary sports. I could see it though. Good for him.

I know that this is high school, but it will get lost in the College section. Brett Dietz of Covington Catholic was a 3 sport athlete for Hanover College. He actually wound up lettering in 4 sports (Football (All American), Baseball, Basketball, and Golf)

A year ago, Paris High School had an athlete that was a star in five sports. Very rare that you get kids to play one or two sports … but five? Jamaal Washington was a key returner and receiver on the football team; was an all-region goalie on the soccer team; led Paris to the district title in basketball by scoring 26 points against GRC in a semifinal upset; ran anchor on the Hounds' 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams; and was the ace pitcher on the Greyhound baseball team!

Corbin had twin brothers last year who started on the football team that made it to the Regional championship game. They were also on Corbin's swim team that qualified for the state meet. In the spring, they were the doubles champions in the Regional tennis tourney and both qualified for the state track meet as members of the track team. They also were both high honors students.

Max Martin & Will O'Rourke from Trinity. Two outstanding O-lineman on the football team also letter in wrestling and Bass Fishing. Might think of a few more for the Rocks but pretty sure it is a small list.

We do have a number of baseball/football combo athletes.

James Robison, Union County - All around football player, leading receiver last year, Quarterback this year, plays both ways, punts and whatever else that is needed - starting guard on the basketball team - plays center field and pitches on the baseball team - one of the best athletes in Western Ky. that nobody knows about.

What about the 4 sport stars? CJ Seay from Scott high school plays baseball, soccer, basketball and the kicker for football!

Cameron Dukes of Bullitt Central QB/FS/Punter and Kicker in football has been a 4 year starter All County, All District, and All Region. Threw for over 2800 yds 21 TDs 1 INT, and rushed for over 500 yds and 11 TDs this year. Ended his football career as all time leader in school history in every passing category.

Baseball has been a starter since his Freshman year at SS and Pitcher. Earning All County, All District , and member of the 6th Region Jr/ SR all star team. Finished last season with a 457 BA 2 HR and had over 70 K's on the hill.

Basketball has been a 4 year letterman as PG/SG earning All County, All District, and All 6th region honors. On pace to join the 1000 point club. Led the team in scoring last season.

With this Dukes is also a CCAP/AP National Honors Society student with a 4.0 GPA and could be a JR.

What about a 4 sport athlete? Is there even any way to do that? Like, football, basketball, baseball and wrestling or track? I don't know when wrestling season is. Or lacrosse?

I have a ton of respect for the 2 and 3 sport kids. Especially kids who are really good at all sports. Those pure, athletic specimens are such a joy to get to see when they are doing well. Kind of like Bo Jackson.

This one is really crazy, but I seem to remember last years starting QB at Harrison Co. ran cross country and football(same season), point guard on basketball, and ran a zillion events in track.

I have always loved the players who play three sports. Truly great athletes.
