I did not see the game. The question I have is did Beechwood have a down game or is CCH this good? If CCH is for real then they should walk to the district title this year.

Beechwood received the opening kickoff and quickly moved downfield for a 65 yard scoring drive. Ethan Stringer took the ball the final 37 yards on a nice run over right tackle and a cutback across field. Mario German's XP made it 7-0 Tigers less than 5 minutes into the game.

 

Covington Catholic answered with a 75 yard drive of their own. Ryan McGinness scored on a 4 yard run, Matt Kloska XP, 7-7 with 5:32 left in the quarter.

 

At this point, the game turned. Beechwood's next three drives were a mix of stopped plays by the CCH defense and penalties. CCH on the other hand was executing well and playing mistake free. At the 10:32 mark of the second quarter, Henry Toebbe finished a 93 yard drive, scoring on a sweep from 10 yards out, Kloska XP, 14-7. The next possession, Beechwood's botched possession ended with a punt from their own end zone and a 30 yard return by McGinness. The Colonels only had to travel 16 yards to score with RB Grant Dyer scoring from 1 yard out, Kloska XP, 21-7 at 8:34. The next bad offensive series by Beechwood led to another short field for CCH. This drive was only 34 yards with Anthony Best scoring from 2 yards, Kloska XP, 28-7 at 4:26.

 

Then the possession that sealed Beechwood's fate happened. The Tigers went on a nice 79 yard drive and stood 4th and 2. Fieger completed a pass to Lucas Benson that was ruled a TD. Then an official from across the field ran across to the side ref looking right at the play and after the officials consulted, they ruled the pass incomplete with 1 second left in the half. This play can be discussed here. Benson caught the ball, both feet in bounds. He then took another step back and was hit by a CCH player. They went to the ground and somewhere along the way down the ball was knocked loose. I believe in high school once you catch a ball and have clear possession in the end zone, it is a TD. I don't believe there is a continuation rule in high school. The officials ruled this incomplete and the halftime score was 28-7 instead of 28-14.

 

CCH received the second half kickoff and the Tigers stopped their drive on downs. Beechwood moved the ball and tried a fake punt on 4th and 13. Slusher ran out of bounds about 3 yards short of the first down and CCH got the ball back. This time CCH completed a 72 yard drive with a 41 yard TD pass by AJ Mayer to McGinness. On this play, the ball was underthrown, a Beechwood defender had the ball hit him in the hands but it bounced out of his hands to McGinness standing several yards behind him giving CCH the score, XP blocked, 34-7 at 4:50.

 

Beechwood fought back with their own long drive of 73 yards. Kyle Fieger completed a 17 yard TD to Aiden Justice, German XP, 34-14 at 2:38. The two teams exchanged 3 and out possessions to end the third quarter.

 

Then CCH had another 3 and out as the 4th quarter opened and punted into the end zone. Beechwood put together another nice drive, moving 80 yards for the TD. Fieger completed a 36 yard TD pass to Justice, with Justice making a very nice cut and move through several CCH defenders for the score, German XP, 34-21 with 8:46 left. It was a glimmer of hope but Beechwood's defense could not get a key 3rd down stop as the Colonels grinded out an 84 yard run dominated drive and put the game away on a 1 yard Dyer run with 3:23 to go, 41-21.

 

The Tigers took their starting skill players out at this point and conceded victory to CCH by running out the clock, picking up 3 first downs and crossing midfield as time ran out.

I'll just say that CCH did very well. They really wanted to turn their ship around and they did, I'm sure that their current coaching staff had a lot to do with it.

It originally was ruled a TD, they got it right. He never had control from what I could see. Plus CovCath's defender had his hands on it. That was my view from the end zone.

 

I was on the opposite side of the field with a wall of people in my way and didn't see anything once the ball left Fieger's hand. I can't say anything regarding the call by the officials.

This was more CCH having a really good game in the trenches. Beechwood looked like they wore down a little. However, these rivalry games can do some weird stuff to your endurance due to all of that adrenaline. Add a quick, big play TD to start the game (great cutback across the field) and it seemed like it Beechwood ' s juices were really flowing. After that CC had a 75yd drive followed by a, in reality, 103 yd drive due to a holding penalty, and the Tigers looked fatigued. A couple bad punts and short fields and they were in a 21 pt whole just like that. They showed great resiliency bouncing back on that final drive of the half. They played much better defensively in the 3rd, and Fiegler bought some time getting out of the pocket to either run or find receivers.

 

It will be tough for a class A school to beat them. They are still my favorite for the title.

Based on the first three games the BW line play was a surprise on the plus side. They handled much bigger lines. They did not handle CCH's line and the Colonels were able to execute their offense. Pure and simple. Did I think they would be pushed around by CCH if Ironton was unable to do it? No. Am I humbled because by opinions before the game were contrary to the results on the field? Absolutely not.

Pretty much went how I thought it would. CC dominated up front on both sides of the ball. FYI to all Beechwood fans, there is little chance of winning the Single A State Championship this season, because Beechwood isn't good enough up front to win state this season, period, end of story.

Based on the first three games the BW line play was a surprise on the plus side. They handled much bigger lines. They did not handle CCH's line and the Colonels were able to execute their offense. BW's d-line did get stronger in the second half Friday as CCH had a few 3 and outs which did not happen in the 1st half. I never said BW's line would not be exploited by CCH. I said it was hard to imagine based on the first 3 games which is all that matters in this case.
