Parents are upset? Really and what are they upset about? Players are embarrassed? Are you kidding me? We are talking about high school kids correct? What is the program embarrassed about?

You know what you do if your defense is small, you stunt and move guys around at the snap rather than letting them sit there and get mauled by guys that are twice their size. All of you can say what you want about the offense being okay, I will ask what game you are watching?

What is your problem with what I posted JOAT? It is all true. And I did not say the offense was OK. I said it was no better than average and I admit that may be kind. I am not commenting on whether parents should be upset or not. I am saying I have heard that some ARE. I also said I am not surprised. If you are part of a program that has had the success that HHS has, you don't want to be on THE TEAM that had a losing record. Just human nature...and it would be embarrassing.

You obviously have a kid on the team (on defense too) and I don't so you are much closer to things than me. It would bother me too if I had a kid on the team and kept hearing that the "talent level" is down. Maybe the coaches are playing the right guys and maybe they are not. But what I (and many others) saw last night was a team that did not have near the talent level as X, who is supposedly down this year. As to "what game are you watching", I was watching the game as a fan of HHS but one who is honest as to what he sees.

I just read a post about Highlands that stated, “this whole program is downright embarrassing.” I mean no disrespect to the HHS fandom here, just an observation from an outsider.

So HHS is losing some games, big whoop. Now you know how the rest of the 95% feel, so welcome to the club. To all the folks “concerned” about the HHS program so far this season, are you kidding me? You have one of the most successful football programs in the state if not the country and you’re crying about a rare off season? How about taking a trek up to the school trophy cases as a reminder. Most schools would GLADLY go through what HHS is going through right now to have the DECADES of success HHS has had. And this goes to the young men wearing that Bluebird uniform that are having issues accepting this blip as well. It’s in YOUR hands, not the coaches, not your parents. You can accept mediocrity or continue to strive for the excellence that has defined your program for YEARS.

I do not know the answer, so I am not trying to take a shot at him. Is this the first time Coach Weinrich has been the OC and what is the DC experience?

Pretty sure he ran the offense last year.

Bingo. Told my son this morning before he left that you are at a crossroads right now. You can either step up and take a leadership role or you can sit back and let the ship sink. It is your choice. Those that want to joke around, take pictures and/or goof off during and after a game in which you got your butt handed to you need to be asked if they really care and are here for the team. If not, the exit door is on your left. Time to find the 15 or 20 guys that really want to be there and play the game of football with the heart and the passion necessary to turn the season around.

Watching this team warmup last night, I felt like I was at a funeral visitation. The coaches can tell you what to do and how to do it, but at the end of the day it is the player that needs to reach down inside themselves and play the game the way it is supposed to be played.

People talk of the kids reading this site, good. I hope they take a long gander at this post and then go look in the mirror and determine whether they want to be on the bus or whether they want to pull over and get off.

The time is now.

I like what you say here but at the same time this is just Higj School football. Let the kids enjoy it if they want many of them this is their last year ever playing. Those seniors have a ring and that is a lot more than 90%+ of the kids playing in this country can ever say.

I realize your kid Ian senior and doesn't want to go out this way but it is just a game. If kids want to take pictures etc

After a game then let them. Let them enjoy this time. There isn't anything you or they can do to change the inevididable outcome of this season.

It's not life or death. It's a game.

10 years from now the HHS fans and former players may look back and say 2015 was one of the worst seasons the school has had but the team still took home rings during their playing time at Higjlands which is a huge accomplishment.

Let the kids enjoy the game. That is my advice.

You want the kids to take a long hard look in the mirror at themselves. Why? Do you actually think they don't want to win? Come on man.

I think some of the problem

comes from the pressure put on them from some of the parents. That is a shame.

You can't all of a sudden turn an Akili Smith into a Dan Marino and that is what you are trying to do to these kids.

A magical motivational speech isn't going to turn things around like you are trying to do. This isn't Hollywood

The sooner you and a couple others realize this team is what it is and stop putting so much rah rah pressure in the kids the sooner they can enjoy their limited time playing the game they love. After all isn't that what matters in the end?

I disagree Greyfox. I get what you are saying as far as big picture but if it were me getting my butt handed to me on my home field, taking pictures with friends and family would be the last thing I would want to do. When you win it's okay but when you lose, get your butt to the locker room, shower and see your friends/family afterwards.

It's the big picture I'm talking about. The pic taking was more of a metaphore. Being preached at every morning from dad or other parents telling you to look in the mirror to see the failure you are is a great message to send. Not.

If there was this much pressure from parents On Their kids playing football everywhere the sport wouldn't have enough teams to play games.

I just think you have to allow

some enjoyment for the kids. If not then why play in the first place?

In the end what gets accomplished? Nothing. This team is what it is. It isn't very good but that is alright. It happens. Why ruin their last year of ever playing the game by making them feel like crap every week. You don't think they hate losing? They don't need a daily reminder of it to pump them up.

I used to enjoy underdogs beating the pereniel top dog. Now I feel sorry for some of these kids knowing the pressure put on them from people outside the team itself.

It's getting to be really sad.

Are you serious? Look in the mirror and see the "failure" that you are? What the heck are you talking about? Seems like you and others like to try and twist things around to toot your own horn. The statement was look in the mirror and see if you want to be a part of turning things around or whether you want to just let things keep going the way that they are.

Q, nice post. Someone that gets it.

It is getting really sad when those that have no insight into anything at Highlands High School get on here and preach. Is the season over? NO Have any district games been played? NO Will there be playoff games? YES

The goal is to look forward to the next week and getting yourself better as a player and coming together as a team. And to that, you are either in or you are out.

Yes the goal is always to get better. The reality is that you don't have to come in here every week after a loss

and tell the kids they need to look at themselves in the mirror and expect a miracle to happen. It's not going to happen.

You don't see

It because you are too close to the situation, but from

Outside looking in reading yours and Highlands1 posts week in and week out, talking bad about coaches. Saying players need to play other positions and when they do and they still lose big it's again coaches fault etc. instead of realizing that 1 it's not the end of the world it is only a game and 2 this is what the team is. That is all.

Rah rah speeches are good if you talk them

Up. They aren't when you tear them down.

I

It was most likely 85 and 86. I think the 84 team was ranked number one on the state overall until they got upset by Melvin Miles and Conner. In the playoffs. But even in 85 and 86 they were like 7-3...or something like that.

I'm relatively sure it was 84 and 85 I'm speaking about. In 84, Highlands wasn't very good. CovCath was ranked No. 1 in the state at one point, but lost to some guy named Tom Duffy and Danville early in the playoffs.

In 85, the Birds may have gone 7-3ish, not sure. They weren't very good though. Didn't make the playoffs. Newport was very good that year. CovCath and Lloyd were also good.

The 86 Birds team actually made the playoffs. Not a great Highlands team, but certainly better than the two previous seasons.

:thumb: Outside and inside the program. I'm not sure if feeling sorry is the right word I feel as each and every one of the upperclassmen have experienced success on the field that many others have never and will never experience. This is just the other side of the coin. There is a lot of added pressure on them and I hate that for them and wish there was something I could say to help them out. I do know that I probably appreciate them even more than some other teams because it is so hard to hang in there when you're working as hard as any other HHS team did yet you are not achieving the same success on the field. I hope that they realize there are a ton of people, both posters and non posters, who support them and have a great deal of pride in them as they work hard to improve each week. Districts are coming up and there is still an opportunity ahead of them.

Keep telling them to look at themselves in the mirror.

I wouldn't put stock in anything this person says. I am still not convinced they are a HHS fan, have a kid playing or even attend games. Just somebody trying to stir the pot.

You are right. I was thinking graduating class and you're talking about the actual year of the season. We are both right, just different ways of saying it. We are talking about the same teams.

I always call the 86 team the best to never win state. I believe they were undefeated and lost to Duffy's Admirals in double OT when Highlands missed an extra point. I believe the 87 team went 7-4 in Eicher's last year and didn't win the playoffs. Duffy started with 88 team. His 90 and 91 teams were not very good and I am pretty sure one of them didn't make the playoffs. Probably last time Highlands didn't make the playoffs. Of course, back then, only two teams made the playoffs.
