Old Carr Creek School Gymnasium

Featured Replies

Is the old Knott County High gym still being used for anything?

Sadly it burned in mid 80s.

I've always wanted to get into the Wayland gym but it's a little more complicated I think. I've stopped by there twice but it's locked with private ownership.

That old hindman gym is really cool I have played many a game in that gym in grade school. It is just like going back in time. The dressing rooms were just like out of the Hoosiers movie. One of my best grade school memories in that gym was beating an un defeated Carr creek elementary when I was in 6th grade thay had a power house. Just any FYI one of the stars on that grade school team was the son of one or the Carr creek state champs Starr James estil Adams son of estil Adams they also had michal potter he got a scholarship to west point for football. Both were grow men in grade school. Cordia's gym is probably the only gym other than hazard that Carr creek and Hindman played in. There is not many of these old treasures left. Cordia is talking about building a new gym and lord knows they need one but I just like that nostalgic feel.

Speaking of that, what is their plan for this year? Saw an article where their gym was damaged from the weather earlier this year.

Wayland was a great old gym as well. Haven't been there in years, glad to hear it's still around.

Love the old gyms and would love to see some of the old ones around the state. There is a very old one near where I live, the old Kavanagh high school gym. Looks like a big old dairy barn or something from the outside. Unfortunately it is in great disrepair and was being used to house/sell antiques the last time I was in it.

We have played in a holiday tournament in Cannalton, IN 4 of the past 5 years. They now play their home games in a modern "community" gym that looks like a small civic arena. Nice place to play. However, the old high school gym is still standing...just not used right now. It had fallen into disrepair over the years and the fire marshals' office would not allow it to be used. Anyway, our first trip there the Cannalton head coach took me over to see it. It's an upstairs gym, with the city fire department now being located downstairs. It was freaking great, even in it's state of disrepair. Would love to play a game there, and there were plans to get it reopened and play some games in it in the future.

Back in the 80's when location scouts for the movie "Hoosiers" were looking for gyms to use for the movie, the Cannalton gym was scouted and it was wanted for the movie. Unfortunately however, and what kept it from being used, a fire had damaged part of the original floor in the late 70's-early 80's. Instead of replacing in kind, it was replaced with a really neat and unique parquet floor. Wanting to make sure the movie was as authentic as possible, the producers did a lot of research and unfortunately could not find a gym anywhere in the area that had a parquet floor during the movies timeframe (mid 50's). Though they really wanted to use the gym...they passed due to the parquet floor.

Played there several times. Loved it. Played tournament there against Gerald Osbourne(UK football recruit) later was Todd Mays teammate at Virgie. Lots of memories, what a fun gym to play in..always thought about King Kelly Coleman when playing there.

Pictures people....talking nostalgically is only good if there are pictures to go with it!

I want pictures of Wayland. Not sure how to get in there yet though

What's the status of the old Western Anderson school? Seems abandoned.

I highly recommend the book Legacies of Kentucky Mountain Basketball by Harold M. Kelly, which has pictures and commentary on a lot of the old gyms in the 13th, 14th and 15th regions. It has several pictures of the Carr Creek and Wayland gyms, plus gyms at a lot of other schools that closed long ago.

Run down and junked up, Sad.

Several years ago I was able to get into Kings Mountain school in Waynesburg (Lincoln County) They had closed the school as an elementary school due to consolidation.

I was told that at one time that the gym was used for high school games, but I couldn't find anything on the interwebs about it. The gym was still intact & the floor looked like it hadn't been waxed in quite some time but the basketball goals were still up. I found a basketball & shot some ball for about 30 minutes in between moving desks & furniture out of the school for the then new 6th grade center.

It was used as the high school gym for Waynesburg Memorial High School prior to consolidation in Lincoln County. It actually was also used at the gym for the new Lincoln County High School for the first year or two while they were completing construction on the gym at the new school.

thanks gchs_uk9!
