September 9, 201511 yr Outstanding TV and I have watched it a couple of times. I fell asleep Monday night watching and caught a few minutes last night. This is one of my favorites of all time. The images are haunting and meshed with the music, stories, commentary and history lesson they tell the sad and complicated story of a dark time in our history.

September 9, 201511 yr Shelby Foote was a great commentator (I think I have his name right) on Civil War history. He tells a story, in his awesomely slow Mississippi accent, where a rabbit runs away from a battle and a soldier says "if i's an old hare I'd run away, too"...(chuckles)...then Foote follows by saying "it wasn't all valor." I think about that quote all the time.

His father had fought for the south and I suppose he was raised with a lot of resentment towards the north. We were always reminded not to discus the civil war with him when we visited each other.

September 19, 201511 yr Try listening to the Sullivan Ballou letter with "Ashokan Farewell" playing in the background and not cry. You can't. It is so sad and so perfect all in one. I agree. I showed this documentary to my history classes and several of the students got teary-eyed during that scene.
