Bluegrasspreps' Class 3A Rankings 08-24-15

Are you [just stirring the pot or serious?

Knoxville Catholic

Cabell Midland

Both are better than anyone on Boyle's schedule... and probably by a pretty good margin at that.

I don't know, PP. I'm not saying the schedule is better than Boyle's, but "ZERO competition" might not be accurate. Pikeville could win Class A and they beat Belfry last year. Cabell-Midland in West Virginia is always good. I don't know anything about Knoxville Catholic, though.

Knoxville Catholic has a calpreps rating of 49.4 and are considered the 8th best team OVERALL in Tennessee.

Cabell Midland has a Calpreps rating of 37 and is considered the 4th best overall team in WV

I'm not into out of state high school sports enough to know how those out of state teams compare to KY teams. Anybody can say anything but unless BGP is going to start ranking other states you may as well say those teams are the best teams overall in the state. There is no true way to know exactly how good any of those out of state teams are other than speculation. But fine, those two teams are awesome and Belfry has a Grade A schedule.

I'm going to get a massage.

There's a chance that by season's end, Belfry could have three or four state champions on its schedule. Knoxville Catholic, Cabell Midland, Pikeville, and JC all have a good shot at bringing home some hardware this year. And don't count out NCC in 2A.

It's a pretty safe bet that Belfry will be adequately challenged by their schedule.

Tates Creek is awful this season, In fact they have been just mediocre in the last several season. So no kudos in beating 6A TC.

I thought they were better this season than previous years. Not a top twenty team, but still...

Scrimmages are scrimmages but let us not forget Belfry also scrimmaged Richlands VA who may very well be the best team in Virginia 2A after returning 9 starters each way from a Sem-Finals team.

FWIW, since PP doesn't believe in Out of State Competition

neutral field

[2015] Knoxville Catholic (Knoxville, TN) 34, [2015] Boyle County (Danville, KY) 21

neutral field

[2015] Cabell Midland (Ona, WV) 28, [2015] Boyle County (Danville, KY) 27

Didn't CalPreps have Central Hardin ranked #8 overall in the state and Boyle County not even ranked?

And no. I don't trust any ranking system that doesn't use eyes to judge a team. Especially 'national rankings'.

It all depends who you talk to, but in the eyes of many... NO they are not.

Fair enough...but to completely throw out two teams who clearly have strong pedigrees completely to support your claim is a bit of a stretch at best is it not?

We will all have a better idea after this week.

Tilghman plays Central Hardin

Lawrence County plays the same Montgomery County team Collins barely beat. Lawrence is another team you left off of Belfry's schedule that IMHO is pretty close to Bell County and another ranked team.

As I said I have no problem moving Belfry off the 1 line in August...but let's see them take a meaningful snap first before insisting they don't belong.

As you said, "I don't trust any ranking system that doesn't use eyes to judge a team". Why should the BGP ranking staff throw Belfry out in place of Boyle or LexCath without at least seeing them play first?

PP, trust me, Knoxville Catholic is one of the best teams in TN and Cabell Midland is one of the best teams in WV. No spin, they are just good.

I mentioned Lawrence County along with NCC and Johnson Central as KY teams that should give Belfry a challenge.

I'm consistent. I never use out of state teams in any sport to judge KY teams. It's always too hard to get a good reading of just how good the out of state teams.

This week will tell another story. Bell County could surprise everyone along with Tilghman.

I have a ton of respect for the BGP ranking staff. I feel their pain and know their struggle. I'll still tell them when they are wrong though. :D. It's all love. :thumb:

IMO Calpreps is a joke.

No way you can compare beating Tates Creek helps your argument. Ryle is a way better team.
I agree and that isn't what I was implying either. If Belfry does anything other than stick it to TC then I think they should drop. Belfry rarely is on top of their game this early and I am sure there are teams that are better than them at this point. After watching both scrimmages, I have a hard time believing they are the best team in 3A and I personally wouldn't have a problem with them anywhere in the 2-5 range. Come November I usually have a much different opinion.
Didn't Boyle beat Tates Creek by 8 in a scrimmage? And I know, I know, "they played subs, they ran different plays, they were within scoring distance twice and didn't score, etc." Point being it is really hard to make definitive judgments on team's placement in the rankings after only one or two games.

Well I don't know if you can call it a win. Boyle was ahead 20-12 after 3rd qt then they split the field and put JV on one end and Freshman on the other.

All this talk about Belfry's schedule inspired me to take a closer look at Cabell Midland. Being from the KY/OH/WV tri-state area, I'm pretty familiar with the program and I knew they'd have a great team this year, but I took a look at their roster and came across this stud - Junior Highlights - Reese Donahue highlights

Reese Donahue, LB/DE - 6'5" 245lbs - 4.7 40 - 375lb bench - 600lb squat - WVU commit

This kid might be the best player to suit up against the Pirates this year. And that's saying a lot.

.. and I want the record to show from all I have gathered thusfar I am in the same camp.

Belfry's defense is very good... but right now they have a major dilemma on offense. Between a brand new Center, a new-ish QB, a brand new FB, and a brand new Guard Belfry is having significant growing pains on Offense and are far from Championship form.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Belfry win Friday by 40+...it also wouldn't surprise me to see them fumble it away so much the game is close.
