Who should be the New Boyd County Coach?

Featured Replies

Do you think they can just line up and pound it against a team like Central?

Great point, the Spread can work if with the right coaching and motivation. I believe that Boyd Co. could run it with much success just like last year. An undersized QB last year did a lot of good things for them and it can create matchup problems and makes a defense play sideline to sideline the entire game.

I am personally a big fan of this offense and its beautiful when its run right.

I don't know who will end up in the driver's seat at BC, but if they bring as much to the program as Coach Love, then BC football will be "moving on up".

Coach Love is a great coach - the boys really respond to him. If he wants the job, I hope that he gets it. However, this would be a huge loss to Ashland. Tony is our defensive coordinator, strength coach, and also coaches our wrestling program.

What has running the spread against JC gotten them thus far?

And if this Coach Love is as good as it seems, (taking that from how bragged on he is here) Sounds like he would be a good asset out at Boyd.

I don't think the spread offense hurt Boyd against Johnson Central as much as Blume's 400+ yards rushing.:D

That Blume boy is something else for sure!

Anyways, to run spread you gotta have a good defense. It just hasn't worked that well at boyd.

Whoever gets it I just hope and pray they get involved in the middle school level and straighten that up or there won't be enough ball players to bother with a high school ball team.

I don't really have a dog in this(or cat I should say), but I agree with you about the middle school level. This seems to be a problem in several school districts. I know we've had our share. I think we are finally beginning to see the light here in Johnson County. In recent years we have started a new peewee league(beginning at age 5) and our elementary schools all the way through to our middle and high school coaches seem to be getting on the same page. Coach Music always showed an interest in the grade school and middle school teams and now Coach Matney is doing the same. I can't tell you how many times I've been to the grade school games and seen Coach Matney there, watching, talking with the coaches, players and parents. He has even made it to a few peewee games.

I think to have a strong, competitive high school team you need a High School coach who will show an interest in the teams that feed into his team.

I'm hoping we have that with Matney and I'm hoping we continue to have that interest from our high school coaches in the future.

I was wandering if Mike Davis would be interested in going back home and coaching. He has things hopping in Grant County and I know he is always involved with his youth league. He is young and works hard to get the job done. I agree all of the coaches mentioned would do a great job. I just think football at BC needs to improve, it was not long ago they were a true powerhouse. Whatever happens I wish BC and Coach Damron the best.

Johnson Central has been blessed at the Middle School level for years. Eddie Blair is one of the best Middle School coaches in the state. Every year he produces one of the top middle school teams in Eastern KY. I don't know if the people there realize how lucky they are to have him working with the young guys there. I wish he was at my old school, they sure could use him! JC is very lucky!

What's wrong with the spread? There have been a lot of spread teams to win the state championship over the last 10 years or so. Boyd Co averaged around 34 points a game this year. Most teams would be happy with that average.

You can still get in the 3 back set and grind it out but ask Tates Creek how that's working since the game has evolved. Unless you are somebody like Danville with superior athletes, it's pretty tough to line up in 3 backs and be really successful for a whole game. Don't get me wrong there is a time and place for that kind of offense but when you look at that Region you can pretty much chalk up a loss everytime you face Rockcastle running that kind of attack as it plays into their hands!

Ask Belfry,Russell and Mayfield if they like the spread. I guess they just have superior atheletes also. You name all the spread teams that have won the State Title and I'll name the 3back teams.I guess you don't have to have superior atletes to run the spread. Just take an average QB and average receivers and you can win with the Hal Mumme offense. :D :D  :scared:

NO offense (Spread, Wing T, Wishbone, I, etc.) is the "right" offense. If there were a "best offense" everyone would be running it.

Every coaching staff must use the offense that best suits the talent that they have, with the caveat that the coaches truly understand (and can teach) the offense that best suits that particular mix of talent. This sounds easy on paper, but the people that sit in the stands on Friday night and second guess coaches have NO idea how tough that really is to do.

The truth is, that in football, most head coaches have one (or two) favorite offenses, and they use whichever seems appropriate for that year. The perfect example of this is Ivan McGlone at Russell, and Bob Lutz at Ironton. They have both had a 30 year run in which to hone their offense to perfection, and when the talent is there, they are in position to take it to a championship.

The vast majority of coaches in high school simply never have the talent come through during their tenure to execute the one or two offenses that they feel comfortable with.

The two exceptions are coaches that have a wide array of offenses at their disposal (i.e. Coach Hart at Ashland, by virtue of coaching at the college level and being a true student of the game) or coaches that can bring in the talent to execute the offense of their choosing. I'm sure that there are other coaches around the state that can teach multiple offenses, and I don't mean to slight them. I simply use Coach Hart as an example because I am aware of his abilities.

To make a claim that any single offense is what a typical high school program should be running is nonsense.

Frances

To say that Coach Hart has better knowledge of offenses because of his college experience and love for the game is overrated. In college about all you see is some version of the I .In high school , you will see a different offense each week of the season and a different defense.Roy Kidd , who coach Hart coached under, ran the I formation forever and he played either a 4-3 defense or a 50. In high school you might see a 3-5-3 one week than a split 6 the folowing week than a wide tackle 6 the next week. I agree with everything else you said.

Frances- My bad, after reading your post again, I agree with everything you said. :ylsuper:

If he does get the job i know he will lose alot of respect from the Ashland community.
