Who should be the New Boyd County Coach?

Featured Replies

NO offense (Spread, Wing T, Wishbone, I, etc.) is the "right" offense. If there were a "best offense" everyone would be running it.

Every coaching staff must use the offense that best suits the talent that they have, with the caveat that the coaches truly understand (and can teach) the offense that best suits that particular mix of talent. This sounds easy on paper, but the people that sit in the stands on Friday night and second guess coaches have NO idea how tough that really is to do.

The truth is, that in football, most head coaches have one (or two) favorite offenses, and they use whichever seems appropriate for that year. The perfect example of this is Ivan McGlone at Russell, and Bob Lutz at Ironton. They have both had a 30 year run in which to hone their offense to perfection, and when the talent is there, they are in position to take it to a championship.

The vast majority of coaches in high school simply never have the talent come through during their tenure to execute the one or two offenses that they feel comfortable with.

The two exceptions are coaches that have a wide array of offenses at their disposal (i.e. Coach Hart at Ashland, by virtue of coaching at the college level and being a true student of the game) or coaches that can bring in the talent to execute the offense of their choosing. I'm sure that there are other coaches around the state that can teach multiple offenses, and I don't mean to slight them. I simply use Coach Hart as an example because I am aware of his abilities.

To make a claim that any single offense is what a typical high school program should be running is nonsense.

Very well said Frances, I 100% agree:thumb: :thumb:

If he does get the job i know he will lose alot of respect from the Ashland community.

Perhaps you are confusing respect with disappointment ?

Unless a coach is disrespectful of his current employer or underhanded in some way then its not fair to lower your respect for someone IMHO. Often as diehard fans we let our emotions get in the way and confuse these two.

Coaches are no different than school administrators, bank officials, business professionals, or a tradesman; they are entitiled to pursue their career the same as rest of us.

On the other side a school can also lose respect in the way they handle coach searches and the hiring process. I think most of us often dont know what goes on behind the scenes and form opinions based on conjecture or personal feelings. When you see schools have a hard time keeping or getting quality coaches, or recycyling coaches on a regular basis you may want to consider its because some do not trust or feel comfortable with how that school has handled matters in the past. Coaches do talk you know;)

Coach Love is an important part of Ashland's success and seems to be more than just a coach to his players. It would be a great loss but Ashland fans would have to be proud of him whatever he chooses- as is the case with the rest of our current staff.

Lets hope we have coach Love on our sidelines for a great 2006 season :thumb: :thumb: :dancingpa

I'm with Woody on this one. I don't think you can ever hold it against a man for taking the opportunity to improve his lot in life.

Ask Belfry,Russell and Mayfield if they like the spread. I guess they just have superior atheletes also. You name all the spread teams that have won the State Title and I'll name the 3back teams.I guess you don't have to have superior atletes to run the spread. Just take an average QB and average receivers and you can win with the Hal Mumme offense. :D :D  :scared:

I don't think you have much of a point. Are you going to try to sell me that Belfry, Russell and Mayfield don't have superior talent in their classes. If that's what you think then that's your opinion but you haven't seen much 1A+2A football if you think those 3 don't have superior talent for their respective classes.

Anyways, to run spread you gotta have a good defense. It just hasn't worked that well at boyd.

I disagree that it hasn't worked, we put alot of points on the board with that offense. But we did not have a very good defense and all we could hope to do was to outscore the opponent.

Does anyone with inside info at BC know when the head coach will be named? It's almost June and lifting and conditiong should be in full force with passing camps and such coming up soon and then practice. You'd think they'd want to find their man as soon as possible.

I agree with Woody & Frances about this (big surprise). :D You don’t lose respect for a man for making a career move.

However, very reliable sources tell me that we don’t have to worry about loosing Coach Love to BC at this time. He seems to like it just fine where he is for now.

As Madeline Kahn said (while playing the role of the temptress Lili Von Schtupp) in Blazing Saddles - "The feeling is moochal!".

Good to hear your input O wise one.

Even better about our staff question. Having a great head coach is important but the number of great assistants we have says as much about the future of the Tomcat program as anything. Just wish it were a little more like the pros where we could pay then more as incentive.

I've been hearing the same:thumb:

My money is on TJ Maynard.

I spoke with someone at BC yesterday who will have much input on the hiring and he said they are still accepting applications and he won't see them until the acceptance period has ended. Looks like it will be a couple more weeks before anything is decided yet...
