Who should be the New Boyd County Coach?

Featured Replies

Not to slight anyone else on the team, but I would have to disagree with your statement, when it is applied to Kasey Clark. You aren't going to see many high school aged young men that are even close to him in terms of athleticism.

A few, here and there, but not many...

Thanks for the compliment of Kasey but Kasey is just 1 player, granted he's a tremendous athlete, especially on the football field. As a whole, Russell opponents had better athletes last year in the playoffs. Russell probaly had the best athlete on the field on most nights in Kasey but their opponents had more good athletes than Russell. My point was that you don't need superior athletes to have a running style offense. You do have to have great athletes to run the spread successfully, as well as a great defense with stamina because they are on the field so much. That was the only point I was trying to make.

Point taken. I know that you can appreciate my point, though - that at least one player (possibly more) on the Russell team takes a back seat to no one in terms of raw athleticism. :thumb:

I totally agree. I always appreciate your points. Always!

I can't ever remember Boyd Co being a powerhouse but I am a fan of Mike Davis. Great guy that loves his kids that play for him!

1983 to 1989 BC rolled ALL OVER EVERYONE in the area except for Ironton. You must be a young one.....:p :thumb:

No...and they didn't beat Russell seven straight either. Maybe the king is showing early signs of alzeheimer's...

I wanted to give him a chance to validate his statement before I got warmed up

I've always questioned whether the time & focus factor involved with running a spread or more wide open offense tended to detract from the defensive side of the ball for those teams - especially for HS with much more 2way players.

1. it seems to take quite a bit of time to master it well

2. the defense tends not to get the physical nature that power teams often have

Just my opinion,

Woody Jr

Woody imo your statement is 100% true. The QB and recievers have to get their timing down just right and recievers have to learn their many routes. This takes time and many reps and cannot get done overnight. I know at Raceland that so much emphasis was put on the offense that the defensive side of the ball suffered tremendously. We put up a lot of points night in and night out but had but probably were in the bottom half of the state in rushing yards given up. Thus, we were an early out in the playoffs. I think that the same thing applies to the kicking game. the spread offense is not as simple as a lot of people may think. This all goes back to one of my favorite sayings: "if we score we may win... If they never score we will never lose, DEFENSE wins championships"!!!!

You haven't seen many 2A teams if you think Russell didn't have superior athletes. How can a kid be mentioned as a candidate for Mr. Football but not be considered a superior athlete. While it takes teams to win championships one kid that good can carry a team a long ways in 2A. Russell also had a nice size line along with a lot of athleticism for a 2A team.

That or you are old:p Lawrence Co and Ashland rolled everybody around there in the 90's. I guess if you go back 23 years then Boyd Co could have been solid but that is a long time ago.

You don't have to have superior athletes to have a run-oriented offense. Though you do need superior athletes to run the spread successfully. Ask Russell, Belfry, Mayfield, ect about the wing T ot the Power I. I know that most of the teams Russell faced last year in the playoffs had better athletes than Russell did and everyone except of Belfry ran a spread type offense. You HAVE to have a great defense to win with the spread. People always talk about the offense, let me remind you that offenses win games and defenses wins championships.

Execution and a staff that knows how to coach your offense is the key. I don't buy that you don't have to have superior athletes to run the ball. That might have flown back in the day but coaching has gotten so much better that teams sneak 8,9,10 men in the box now days. You can beat your head against the wall all you want but if I have more players then you can block especially if I have 2 more players then you can block then have fun running at me all day. Also if you can't open holes then you can't run the ball. The spread (different versions) is all about numbers. It takes those extra guys you have to block out of the box and it doesn't take superior athletes to get them out of there. You now have a numbers advantage on offense. The spread also makes people think of throwing the ball 50 times a game. Sit down next year and watch WVU. They will put on a clinic as too how you run the ball out of the spread.

It creates a numbers advantage + allows you to get your 2 or 3 best athletes the ball out in space to make something happen. A lot of old school coaches will never open their eyes and see the advantages. I've been in both offenses (3 back and spread). I think there is a time and place for both. If you run into superior talent then you better be able to spread them out and creat a numbers advantage of some sort.

As for the offense wins games, defense wins championships..... not totally true. Special teams, Offense and Defense win championships.

Look at Trinity, Male, Lex Cath, Highlands, Breathitt etc. They all have good defenses but they could light the scoreboard up. If they got up on 3 back run teams then good luck catching up ( I lost in a final 4 because we couldn't catch up). If you are multi dimensional then you have a chance to get back into games.

Take a look at the Texas/USC game. Lienart had an awsome game but there was no answer for the Texas offense. Texas just flat outscored them.

Mr. G.I. Joe, You don't have to tell me about Kasey, he's my little brother. I know more about his abilities than anyone. I also know the kids on that Russell team and I know what kind of athletes they are. I have seen many 2A teams and I saw every team that Russell played in the playoffs last year. You obviously did not see the teams Russell played in the playoffs . If you have read my post, you would see that I was only talking about the teams Russell played in the playoffs last year. I only stated that the teams had MORE great athletes than Russell, I never said that any one of them were BETTER athletes than Kasey because there was not. And even if there was, I would have a hard time admitting it. Do you know who was the biggest player on Russell line was last year? Somehow I doubt you do.

Mr. G.I. Joe, I really don't think you would be too successful as a coach. Are you saying that you don't have to have great athletes to run a spread style successfully? I'm not even going to justify that with a response. The various situation you mentioned like the Texas/USC game, USC lost that because they couldn't stop Texas with their DEFENSE. I'm not going to sit here and argue about game situations. Everything you said just proves my point even more about how important defense is. Yes, you have to score points but more importantly you have to stop points from being scored, period. I think some of the greatest coaching minds ever would agree with me about Defense wins championships. I think I'll take their opinions over yours. I respect your opinion but I totally disagree with it.

I just won a state championship this year and have been in 3 final fours since 1991 but I'll take your word that I couldn't coach. Your opinion speaks for itself. I'd love to coach Russell and their athletes any day in 2A ball. I don't think you will find many on here that will buy that they don't usually have superior athletes in 2A. Congrats on being Kasey's brother by the way. He represents Eastern KY well!

As for the Texas/USC game... VicneYoung won that game plain and simple. Once again 1 player on a team can make a difference. The Texas defense sure as heck didn't win the game it was their offense led by an elite player much like your brother.

People have different opinions, I respect yours but don't agree. Checks and Balances are a good thing:thumb:

I don't recall BC EVER beating Ashland 7 in a row - EVER
