July 21, 201511 yr Phillips is the best I've ever seen at making the "impossible" plays. Having said that, no, he's not the best defensive 2nd baseman of all time. Just last year he had the 13th best range factor among ML 2nd baseman and was 6th in the league in dWAR among 2nd basemen.

Range Factor per game is (Putouts + Assist)/Games played, that has little to do with actual range. Has as much to do with pitchers inducing ground balls as anything. BP is ranked 193 in All-Time Range Factor (Robbie Alomar is 190 all time), I think that alone shows that Range Factor isn't the best or even a good way to determine how good of a fielder someone is.

July 21, 201511 yr BP is by far the best fielding 2nd baseman i have ever seen. He makes those outstanding plays look easy and they are not! I love statistics, but you can make numbers say whatever you want them to say. Range Factor, DRS, UZR, how much difference is there between 1st and 6th place? 1 out every 10 games that makes a .03 difference in your Range Factor? Come on - just watch the game, he is by far the best defensive 2nd baseman in the game!
