July 21, 201511 yr I'd might put Sandberg ahead as well. He definitely is a top 5 defensive second baseman though. Sandberg was very sure handed but he didn't have near the range of Phillips, Pedroia, White or Alomar.
July 21, 201511 yr No way Sandberg is in that discussion. He was so protected by the scorers at Wrigley it was a joke. Absolute joke. It wasn't just the scorers, with the lack of range of a lot if the Cubs infielders the grounds crew was notorious for keeping the grass absurdly long.
July 21, 201511 yr BP is by far the best fielding 2nd baseman i have ever seen. He makes those outstanding plays look easy and they are not! I love statistics, but you can make numbers say whatever you want them to say. Range Factor, DRS, UZR, how much difference is there between 1st and 6th place? 1 out every 10 games that makes a .03 difference in your Range Factor? Come on - just watch the game, he is by far the best defensive 2nd baseman in the game! You watch the Reds every day. If you watched the Red Sox every day you'd feel the same about Pedroia. Both are elite and there's not a great deal of difference between them with the glove.
July 21, 201511 yr Id have to see what the old guys could do before I decide if BP is the best. BP definitely makes incredible plays and makes defense an art, but I also like that he has good fundamentals and he does the little things to make sure that he succeeds. This may sound trivial, but I love how when there are two outs or no runners on that he goes down on one knee to help prevent the ball from getting away on a bad bounce.
