There's a Confederate Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery. Should it be removed?

There are several high schools named after Robert E. Lee in various states. Should they be renamed? Maybe re-name them all after Ulysses S. Grant?

Where does the line get drawn?

PBS it was part of a background info on some stuff that was brought on there. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest and the KKK | Follow the Stories | Antiques Roadshow | PBS

I'm not defending him, just saying there is more there than what has always been told about him.

The Southern historian and writer Shelby Foote once said there were only two geniuses of the Civil War: Forrest and Lincoln. Forrest's exploits on the battlefield are legendary, and the facts about the man are pretty firm: He was a slave trader, he butchered black troops who surrendered at Fort Pillow and he was one of the founders of the KKK.

If the final decision is to move his statue and remains to a Daughters of the Confederacy cemetery somewhere, so be it. Honor him as a valiant warrior, but nothing more.

Is there any truth that the KKK was founded as a way to protect southerners from some Northern reconstructionists who being a bit too aggressive in their ways but then as membership was growing, extremists took over the Klan, booted the original founders to the side, and formed it into a hate group? I have heard that more than once

Who said that? Someone who loves and waves the confederate flag because of their heritage?

Not sure, I know the first time I ever heard it was from someone on here. So who do you think that rebel flag waving BGPer is? By God kick em off the site.

The pyramids in Egypt need to go... Very offensive..

Forrest is one of my favorite Civil War Generals, a true military genius and a man who changed his stand later in life on race. He was a major player in WKY during the war and after the war he offered his services to the Union Army should the US end up at war

Per Wiki on his last public apearance

In July 1875, Forrest demonstrated that his personal sentiments on the issue of race now differed from that of the Klan, when he was invited to give a speech before an organization of black Southerners advocating racial reconciliation, called the Independent Order of Pole-Bearers Association. At this, his last public appearance, he made what the New York Times described as a "friendly speech"[10] during which, when offered a bouquet of flowers by a black woman, he accepted them as a token of reconciliation between the races and espoused a radical agenda (for the time) of equality and harmony between black and white Americans

I am honestly trying to find somewhere in the world where they celebrate the loser of a rebellion. Where else do they display the flags and have monuments standing?

Those that can't defend it resort to hyperbole and straw men. :lol2:

Except for Toothpick, you are spot on.

Forrest died in 1877 and, according to the terms of his will, was buried in Memphis' Elmwood Cemetery among his former soldiers. In 1904, however, the remains of Forrest and his wife were disinterred and relocated to the Memphis park that now features his statue.

Sounds like the original gravesite may not have been grandiose enough, so someone felt it necessary in 1904 to dishonor the general's stated intention to be buried with his men.

If they follow the rules they are allowed to stay and say whatever they want last I saw. You don't think there are BGPers who are racist or flag bearing confederates at heart? I'm sure there are plenty. Can I name them? Nope. I'd be surprised if there aren't any at all though. I wouldn't kick them off of the site either. They pay their money like everyone else. Follow the rules is the only requirement for an active account.
