I'm going to have to disagree here. Coach Eviston is going to get this program in top shape. he's a great coach and more importantly, a great leader who the young men will respect and work hard for. He has already made some smart changes such as removing outside interference in the program (parents).

 

I'm curious how you feel the "removal of outside interference in the program- ie: parents" was done.

Personally, in this short time frame under Eviston, I will agree that I have not seen or heard of any parental interference - then again, I never saw or heard of parental interference with last years staff either. That wasn't the prior staffs issue IMO. Sure there were always some malcontents in the stands- what program doesn't have those? But I never witnesessed or heard of instances where it interfered with the coaching.

The only one I feel qualified to judge are the 6A but here goes:

 

McCracken: Pretender. The lost to Manual last year and not by a narrow margin. Manual was fourth in the Super District. So long as McCracken needs to get past the the Jefferson County teams in won't be a contender.

 

Simon Kenton: If the criteria is 'reach the state final' they are a contender. If the criteria is 'win the state title' they are a pretender. They are good enough to make it there, but whichever team survives the bracket out of Louisville will eat them alive.

 

This is not to disparage either team, but in the past twenty years a non-Louisville team has won only twice at the highest class: Scott County (2013) and Nelson County (1996).

I feel Paintsville will have a tougher route to BG. Pikeville won't overlook the Tigers this year. Of course I believe it's over for both when/if they meet Beechwood.

Owensboro Catholic - Contender

Shelby Valley - Contender

 

Shelby Valley will have the easiest way out of the east if they can get by NewCath. Not an easy feat, but Eric Ratliff is probably one of the most underrated coaches in Kentucky. Owensboro Cath is always a tough out, but with a loaded west, I don't see much from them.

Paducah Tilghman - Contender

Russell - Pretender

 

Russell runs into Belfry in the regional championship, and loses. PT may have a nice squad this year. However a loaded west will be tough to get by.

 

4A

Collins - Contender

Ashland Paul Blazer - Contender

 

I like Baker and Ashland to get out of the first round or so, but I'm not sure how they will fair up against Johnson Central yet. Collins will be a tough game too. I look for one of the Warren Schools to play them tough.

Covington Catholic - Pretender

Owensboro - Predender

 

Owensboro with a new coach makes me uneasy to put them as a contender. CovCath, will lose to FTH.

1) Removed Wirth. I don't think this was a good hire to begin with and I believe that Wirth entertained influential parent comments. The lines were blurred between coaching and personal friendships

 

2) Hired Eviston: No nonsense, couldn't care less what parents think about X & O's or if little Johnny got enough PT. He will bring a different perspective that is much needed. Administration is behind his philosophy and believes in his approach, he is trusted to be a solid role model for the young men he coaches.

 

Almost every program has parental grumbling. CovCath, during Wirth's tenure, had more than their share, but also had problems with boundaries. Eddie has cut that tie and if the CovCath parents will let him run his program they will be a contender.

 

To be a full fledged contender CovCath MUST be able to win against The Birds...

I believe Eviston is a great hire, but I do not believe for a minute Wirth entertained influential parents. If anything, I saw "needy" parents get shut down and the opposite effect occurred. The boundry problem was not between the parents and coaches and that's all I'm going to comment on that subject.
