Ranking The Top 10 Public Schools Since 2000

Featured Replies

I Am Not 100% sure what the following are classified as:

Central- I know it is a Magnet School, but still think it is County

Male- Pretty sure it is a Traditional County?

Got it. Central is what JCPS calls an "all-magnet" school and so has no real home district. Male is in JCPS's traditional system. What those terms really mean is something I'll have to leave to someone more acquainted with JCPS than I am.

Per Wikipedia - Paducah Tilghman High School is a public secondary school in Paducah, Kentucky, and is the only high school of the Paducah Independent School District.

Per the school website - Corbin High School is the only high school in the Corbin Independent School District and is located in southeastern Kentucky on Interstate 75 in Corbin, KY which has a population of approximately 15,000 people.

I believe Russell is an independent school district.

I'd move Male up to the seven spot. Danville hasn't done much in almost ten years and Male faces stiffer competition within their own region and district. Beechwood while good, also does not face that kind of hometown competition.

If this were the past five years rather than past fifteen I'd argue for moving Bowling Green up, but as it is I support where they are.

Overall a very good list.

The Criteria:

- Hardware rules. Heavy emphasis on post season success, specifically Titles and Finals.

- I am doing this on a "Pound for Pound" basis. It's not about whether a 6A should always be better than a 2A, but about how strong each program is relative to it's competition.

- In order to be considered the program has had to at least play in a State Finals, as well as show sustained success.

The Field:

Beechwood

Belfry

Bell Co

Boyle County

Bowling Green

Breathitt County

Central

Corbin

Danville

Hazard

Highlands

Male

Mayfield

Paducah Tilghman

Pulaski County

Rockcastle County

Russell

Scott County

Somerset

Simon Kenton should be in the mix. They played in the state finals in 08 they have 101 games since 2000 also. They have won 32 games in the last 3 years.

Who do you put them over?

Only two teams you can really make a case for are Somerset and Corbin since neither have a State Title like SK in that time frame...but Somerset and Corbin both have simply been much stronger over the span of 15 years.

SK has to be lotted in with teams like John Hardin, Johnson Central, Collins, Warren Central, Dixie Heights, Caldwell County, Pburg, Williamsburg, and Glasgow.

Solid programs..but lacking the total body of work to be in with this elite company.

Russell is Independent

So is Beechwood and Highlands. Independent schools are public.

SK would beat all those teams you mentioned.

That's not what this is about...it's about pound for pound how the program stands up.

Simon Kenton should beat Somerset and Corbin since they have nearly three times the male enrollment.

Instead SK has a 100-74 record and have only advanced to the Semi-Finals or beyond once in a 15 year stretch.

Once again... doesn't come close to being in the same breathe of the accomplishment of these 19 programs listed.

Ranking the Top 10:

10. Scott County- Cardinals edge Hazard by the slightest of margin with almost identical resumes. One more Regional Final the only difference

9. Male- Strength of competition and 4 trips to the Finals

8. Danville- Strong resume and essentially a dead tie with Beechwood but..

7. Beechwood- Tigers get the advantage on recent success over the Ads

6. Bowling Green- Purples get the edge on Championships

5. Belfry- Very strong resume as the Pirates are near the top in every category

4. Central- Their Head to Head vs. Belfry give them the edge

3. Boyle County- The Championships move them up. Not the strongest recent resume, but their run is undeniable.

2. Mayfield- At or near the top in every category

1. Highlands- #1 in everything but Regional Titles. No brainer. Birds rule the Publics!

Good work. I believe you pretty much nailed the top 10.

Calling RAM :lol2:

I would bump MF to the #1 spot and slide Highlands into the #2 . MF's #1 in regional titles shows year after year they are there more than anything
