With the high school level you should also take into account the level of competition played they played too. Brohm and Redman had excellent levels of competition compared to most of the others on the list.

It balances out. Besides Brian didn't have a bunch of stellar D1 WRs. He had some good receivers, but Trinity's scheme really allowed those guys to excel despite their lack of D1 ability.

As happens to a lot of guys. The ability to make it as a QB in the modern NFL is so insanely rare as to be nigh on unimaginable. Your game has to be nearly perfect.

How about Roger Walz of Highlands?

 

I was talking to a real old man today. He was telling me that Roger was a three year starter at QB for the Birds. He won back to back state titles in 1960 and 1961. He told me Roger played for UC and UK during his college years. He couldn't remember if he went pro or not. Starred at basketball and baseball also.

 

He also told me of Roger getting kicked out of a game for retaliating against the other teams third string player. Highlands didn't have a back up QB at that time so they had a RB handing the ball off the rest of the game without a pass.

 

That was the 1959 state championship game against Henderson, only game Walz lost in 3 years. Birds didn't really pass much that year as Walz was a good runner and the guys he handed off to were the Burt boys and Mike McGraw.

Every QB listed above Simms had great HS careers, very few had great college careers that would be worth mentioning and even fewer had any NFL career worth mentioning. Sorry, but I understand the love for the Ville' QB's but Brohm #1? Really?????? sorry, I just have to disagree with the qualifications for this topic. There isn't a bigger chamionship in all of Football at every level than the Super Bowl and something not one other person listed will ever get a sniff of.

He got drafted by Green Bay and was behind Rogers and Flynne (sp) so he wasn't getting many reps. Maybe if he had ended up some place else where he would of gotten the chance to develop.

 

Couch had an issue with his throwing motion which help lead to having shoulder surgery. He spent time with Darin Slack to improve it and was looking good until a steroid story from yahoo sports ended a comeback before it started for him.

I would agree and it also says a lot about playing on a great team in HS gives one a much better chance to look good than a great QB playing in a bad team. To be fair I feel as though you can make an argument for Simms, Couch or Brohm on this list. The thing is which level do ou look at? High School (advantage Brohm), College (probably a wash between the 3), Pro (advantage Simms, no question).

 

I definitely think that any of these 3 could be placed as #1 . It just depends on where you emphasize their performance and at what level. I sure as heck wouldn't object to Simms being 1 on this list.

Again, the title of the thread is 10 Best QB's of KY History. This way it isn't even close, it is Simms. Much different for high school, although Simms did take Southern to the finals in '73, his Jr. year when they lost to Trinity 16-0. He probably threw 5-6 passes. Southern was a running team (probably 80-90%) when Phil QB'd, another reason you did not hear about him much.
