Cincinnati Officer Shot This Morning

Featured Replies

Yes. Still very cool though.

It's awesome that the law makes sure to take care of them. I wonder if other states have that requirement? If not, they definitely should.

I guess now I'm a little disappointed that the UC President tweeted it out this morning seemingly trying to use the situation as a way to get good PR for the school by making it sound like he was doing this out of the kindness of his heart.

Maybe he wasn't aware.

Maybe he wasn't aware.

Maybe so, and I hope you're right, but I highly doubt the President of a university wouldn't be aware of a law like that.

Is UC considered a state university ?

I know Kentucky has the same law.

Ohio Revised Code requires state universities and community colleges to pay up to four years' tuition for children and spouses of officers who die in the line of duty.
http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/3333.26

(2) Any resident of this state...who is the child of a public service officer killed in the line of duty...and who is admitted to any state university or college as defined in division (A)(1) of section 3345.12 of the Revised Code, community college, state community college, university branch, or technical college shall not be required to pay any tuition or any student fee for up to four academic years of education, which shall be at the undergraduate level.

I think most of us had never heard of it. It is possible he hadn't either but I get your feeling. Either way it's a wash because it's great that the law exists.

He was also backed up by a parole officer not a cop' date=' who killed the perp.[/quote']

Another officer killed the idiot, not the parole officer.

Op-ed: Note from Hummons' grieving father

Ronald Hummons is the father of Trepierre Hummons, who was killed Friday after fatally shooting Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim.

I never in a million years thought I would be in a position to be grieving the loss of two lives. This unfathomable tragedy has devastated our family and all of our loved ones. We will forever ask ourselves, "How did this happen?" I have been racking my brain trying to see if I missed the signs of Tre's emotional distress. I didn't see the Facebook postings that you have been hearing about until it was too late.

Until this happened we were a normal blended family. His mother and I haven't been together for over a decade, but our son was a good kid. He was preparing to leave for the Navy in three weeks. He had a loving heart, so I just don't understand how this happened. As a father, I am asking why Tre wanted to end his life. What was so bad that he didn't want to talk to me? I would have never thought Tre was capable of wanting to take his own life, let alone another person's life. He just wasn't built that way. He wasn't raised that way. We talked about never giving up. So I can't understand this. I wish I could. I wish I could just speak to him and understand what was going on that morning.

He was my baby. I know in the media's eyes, he was a grown man. But as a father, he will always be my baby. When I looked at Tre, I see the young man who asked his father to do a pizza party for his class if they all passed a test in 2nd grade. I see the young man who loved to laugh. I see the young man who would do his best not to get into trouble, because he wanted to be a good example to his little brother. Tre loved his family. Tre was excited about going to see his family down South for the 4th of July, so this just doesn't make any sense to me. I am just lost. I miss my baby.

Logically, I understand why he is gone. I understand that he took the life of a hard-working father. I understand and grieve for this officer. And as a father, I grieve for my son. I grieve for the grandchildren he will never give me. I grieve for the naval career that he will never have. I grieve for the pain that our city is experiencing.

To the family and colleagues of Officer Kim: My son's incomprehensible act took away from you the most valuable and most important thing of all, a loved one. I am so sorry for your loss. My son's mother tried to help Officer Kim. She called for help on his radio. She held him and begged him to hold on. I don't want you to think that we don't grieve for you, because we are grieving for our son. I apologize that my son is the cause of your pain.

I don't know what happened that made him beg for Officer Kim to shoot him. I am finding out things bit by bit and I still have unanswered questions, as I am sure you have. I don't know why my son called the police on himself. I would like to think that it was a cry for help. We had no idea about Tre's mental state that morning. My son was in unimaginable pain. I am so sorry that Tre's pain cost Officer Kim his life.

Grieving with you,

Ronald Hummons

Ono also donated 10K of his own money to the family FWIW...

I like Ono a lot, hope he stays for the long haul.

Tough reading the fathers statement being a father also...my biggest fear has always been that my kids wouldn't come to either myself or my wife if they were in a situation like this and needed help...my heart truly breaks for both families.

Very nice.

Very nice.

He donates his entire yearly bonus to various charities every year. This year to the tune of 200K. He has also declined a raise every year since getting the job. The guy walks the walk...
