He donates his entire yearly bonus to various charities every year. This year to the tune of 200K. He has also declined a raise every year since getting the job. The guy walks the walk...

Always comes across as a good cat.

Op-ed: Note from Hummons' grieving father

Ronald Hummons is the father of Trepierre Hummons, who was killed Friday after fatally shooting Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim.

I never in a million years thought I would be in a position to be grieving the loss of two lives. This unfathomable tragedy has devastated our family and all of our loved ones. We will forever ask ourselves, "How did this happen?" I have been racking my brain trying to see if I missed the signs of Tre's emotional distress. I didn't see the Facebook postings that you have been hearing about until it was too late.

Until this happened we were a normal blended family. His mother and I haven't been together for over a decade, but our son was a good kid. He was preparing to leave for the Navy in three weeks. He had a loving heart, so I just don't understand how this happened. As a father, I am asking why Tre wanted to end his life. What was so bad that he didn't want to talk to me? I would have never thought Tre was capable of wanting to take his own life, let alone another person's life. He just wasn't built that way. He wasn't raised that way. We talked about never giving up. So I can't understand this. I wish I could. I wish I could just speak to him and understand what was going on that morning.

He was my baby. I know in the media's eyes, he was a grown man. But as a father, he will always be my baby. When I looked at Tre, I see the young man who asked his father to do a pizza party for his class if they all passed a test in 2nd grade. I see the young man who loved to laugh. I see the young man who would do his best not to get into trouble, because he wanted to be a good example to his little brother. Tre loved his family. Tre was excited about going to see his family down South for the 4th of July, so this just doesn't make any sense to me. I am just lost. I miss my baby.

Logically, I understand why he is gone. I understand that he took the life of a hard-working father. I understand and grieve for this officer. And as a father, I grieve for my son. I grieve for the grandchildren he will never give me. I grieve for the naval career that he will never have. I grieve for the pain that our city is experiencing.

To the family and colleagues of Officer Kim: My son's incomprehensible act took away from you the most valuable and most important thing of all, a loved one. I am so sorry for your loss. My son's mother tried to help Officer Kim. She called for help on his radio. She held him and begged him to hold on. I don't want you to think that we don't grieve for you, because we are grieving for our son. I apologize that my son is the cause of your pain.

I don't know what happened that made him beg for Officer Kim to shoot him. I am finding out things bit by bit and I still have unanswered questions, as I am sure you have. I don't know why my son called the police on himself. I would like to think that it was a cry for help. We had no idea about Tre's mental state that morning. My son was in unimaginable pain. I am so sorry that Tre's pain cost Officer Kim his life.

Grieving with you,

Ronald Hummons

Touching. I think most parents get it. Yes, it was an AWFUL action by the son but he's a)still your son and b)he's dead. I can't imagine what's going through their minds. No way they're sleeping.

Kudos to the dad for the letter.

That's AWESOME. Mad respect for a fella that can do it like that.

Well, today the ship has sailed on the father accepting what went down. Today during his interview with Bill Cunningham: Saying his son is not a murderer, not a cop killer, not a thug that the "media" is trying to portray him.

I heard part of it - not all so I missed context.

I think we can all agree that even good people sometimes snap when something bad happens. Maybe Dad is saying that's his son's case. I haven't heard him saying the son was not guilty of the most heinous act. He seems to have accepted that so wording is irrelevant to me.

I just listened to the full interview. I thought he handled himself fairly well. Some will be upset with him for not wanting to attach the "murderer" label to his son but I get his point and can understand where he is coming from as a parent.

Bill C continuing to harp on the term was a bit much.

University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono has offered to provide full tuition to all 3 of Officer Kim's children if they want to attend UC. Awesome gesture.

I don't understand why this isn't a standard operating procedure for officers killed in the line of duty: spouse and all dependents are offered full tuition to any state college.

Doesn't seem like the numbers would be all too crazy. I know Kentucky used to offer a deal like that to firefighters killed or gravely and permanently injured in the line of duty. The father of one of my best friends had his back broken in the early 80's when he fell through a roof that collapsed beneath him while he was trying to cut in vent holes while the building was on fire. All of his kids were offered free tuition to any state college.
