Exactly. I was in high school in the late 1990s and I remember Somerset not being very good. Around that time is when I got into researching high school football history. I started to realize that those few years in the late-90s were basically the only time in their history that Somerset wasn't good.

Interested to see how redistricting in Bowling Green/Warren County will affect South Warren.

 

The redistricting that is most likely to negatively affect South Warren is when the KHSAA reclassifies school again. In two years it will be very likely that SW will have enough of an enrollment to move up to 5A where BGHS will await as a district mate. Although, they may not actually make the move up to 5A until 2019 when the whole state is reclassified by the KHSAA. Long story short, SW doesn't have much time to win a state title.

According to their alignment memo (04/15/14 ? Football Draft Alignment Information and Feedback | Kentucky High School Athletic Association), they do. Specifically referenced:

 

Mid-Alignment Adjustment: There will be a review of alignments after the first two years with potential adjustments in class based on schools having a significant change (increase or decrease) in average boys enrollment, and such change placing a school below or above class bounds.

 

It is also referenced in the competition rules (http://khsaa.org/handbook/competitionrules/fbcompetitionrules.pdf), specifically:

 

4) The classification shall be for a four-year period, which may be extended by the Board of Control. The alignment will be reviewed upon receipt of the 2015-2016 school year enrollment information from the Kentucky Department of Education for possible adjustment to begin with the 2017 playing season. In order to be considered for adjustment, the four-year average enrollment (including 2015-16) would have to be within the boundaries of another class, and the school shall have had at least a 10% change in four year average enrollment during the two-year period.

 

Now, as I read it, that should put South Warren as an almost mortal lock to be moved up. Their placement in 4A depended almost entirely on having the enrollment parameters expanded from the previous two years to the previous four in this latest alignment. They probably would have had the option to move down with teams playing up, but they would have been 5A if it has just been the previous two years. The two years that got added on were the first two ever for the school, and the smallest the school is ever likely to be. The male enrollments used in the alignment were:

 

13/14 - 564

12/13 - 525

11/12 - 488

10/11 - 415

 

For a four year average of 498. Just starting with the simple part, in two years those first two years won't be part of it. They have a two year average of 544.5 from the last two years that still will be factored in. 110% of 498 is 547.8, so you can see they're already close to the threshold that would be considered for adjustment. When you consider their freshman class from 13/14 was 47 students heavier than the senior class from that year, you can plainly see they're only getting larger, not smaller. My guess is, in two years South Warren will have a two year average of something more like 560-565, putting them above the 10%

 

But when I say it should be a mortal lock, I am vividly recalling the way these exact same parameters were ignored the last time around. South Warren could have easily been moved to 4A midway through this last alignment, and was left in place. So no idea if they would change that up now. South Warren is a 5A-sized school now and has been for at least two years. They'll be a 5A sized school in two more years as well, but tough to know what the KHSAA will do.

That district also included a stout Green County team and a Metcalfe County team who was in their best years. Definitely one of if not the best district 1A ball in Kentucky has ever seen. If my memory serves me correctly, the '99 Somerset team that made it to the semis had to beat the 1 seed in their district in Campbellsville and 2 seed Danville in the playoffs, both of whom had destroyed them in the regular season, to get to the semifinal game against Hancock County.

I toyed with them for the 5 teams most likely to win a title first... but truth be told I just simply have a hard time giving credence to them in 6A as history shows the odds are not in their favor, especially with a Louisville powerhouse always looming in the Semi's

In 1999, Green County was still in a Class AA district with Casey, Corbin, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne. Green didn't move down into that loaded Class A district until 2001.

 

Metcalfe was 0-10 in 1999. Their better years really didn't kick in until 2002 when they went 7-4. They would be regional runners-up in both 2003, 2005, and 2006, before making it to the state semifinals in 2007 when they moved up to the new Class 2A.

Yes. Harrodsburg was the one seed but had beat Campbellsville (21-13), Danville (28-22), and Somerset (15-14) by a combined 15 points.

 

Somerset, on the other hand (and as I think you mentioned earlier), had been routed by both Campbellsville and Danville during the season but got hot in the playoffs.

Somerset is easily at the top of this list. With 665 all-time wins as a program good enough for sixth in the state, the Briar Jumpers are the lone team on the Top 10 list without a state championship.
