Not saying it's allowed. KHSAA has rules against it. I'm saying it happens.

The sponsors I am familiar with do not do it for athletes. However, I have heard stories of sponsors for athletes at local Catholic schools. Not many but they're out there.

 

....and most of the time it's Alum of those schools who now have the means and are making it possible for those who don't have the means. I applaud those folks.

So you are saying NCC softball will rise to the top? j/k. Just trying to wrap my head around this stuff because some say no way it can happen and others seem to indicate that not only can it happen, but it does.

I just looked on the Notre Dame website, and didn't see one scholarship that paid for a full tuition.

Correct, but who initiated the contact does not change the enrollment rules. The whole bylaw is predicated on where the kid is enrolled. These rules only apply to kids not enrolled in the school or the feeder. Once they are enrolled, the rules do not apply.

I've known a lot of Private school athletes and their families and believe me all of them paid tuition. Including ones that were very much athletic "stars". And you better not be late with a payment because there is a late fee.

The KHSAA has to clearly define times of the year so they can say when rules apply. Summer is a gray area so IMO they chose to specifically define the athletic year as basically dead period to the end of the school year. So that gap allows for SOME of their bylaws to be inactive.

 

It does NOT mean schools can recruit during that period. It does mean that coaches can coach. Kids can run open gym with other schools. Kids are NOT tied to one school at that particular time.

 

It all changes when the dead period starts.

So if tuition is $5000, you can't get a $5000 scholarship but you can get 5-$1000 scholarships? Makes sense. That's fair. You still don't pay anything. All one has to do is read the recorder newspaper and see all these scholarships people are "winning".

 

What would happen if a kid in Independence won a $1000 scholarship to the high school of his choice, and his choice was to use it towards out of district tuition to Highlands? I don't think it would fly. But it's fine if it's for the private school? Goes on all the time.

If you had the financial means, and you found out a student would like to attend your alma mater, but didn't have the means to do so........would you make it a reality?

 

Irregardless of athletic prowess I've got ZERO problem with this. Many catholic grade schools/high schools have alum that have done well for themselves and their act of Christian Stewardship (giving of Time, Treasure, & Talent) shows through.
