So I know this has been debated a million times, but this quote stuck with me from the summer camp forum. What else are we going to talk about.

 

"Actually.. Any public school is now a feeder for ANY catholic high school. No different than any public high school receives kids from private schools.

 

Open enrollment means open opportunities. There are talented kids from Johnson MS who are playing at Manual, Male, Holy Cross, PRP.. etc..

 

Never knew a HS to 'own' MS kids based on geography? Could be wrong.. But doubt it... "

 

1) I agree they are similar, but public schools cannot offer scholarships or tuition assistance to go to their school. So if you are considering two schools and one of them can let you go for free, isn't that an advantage? Because at least one private school from up here last year only had one paying student out of their top 6 players on the roster. If those kids as freshman had an opportunity to play at a good public school for free, would they have ended up at that successful private school?

 

2) Is it common practice for private schools around the state to "invite" MS kids from outside their district to come play in the high school summer leagues? That seems to be happening A LOT in NKY and I'm just curious if that's the way it is around the state and are there any rules being stretched/broken when that happens?

 

My disclaimer:

I could really care less about the public vs private. I want to beat the team that lines up on the other side of me and I don't care how they got there. Secondly, I could care less if they made the entire state free to roam where ever they wanted...meaning attend any school you want and transfer any time you want. I could care less. I do get frustrated with rules aren't followed or are stretched to meet a need. Or if there are advantages sought out where there should be equality.

Highlands has had open enrollment for quite awhile now. I was an out of district student back in the 80's when we moved out of Ft. Thomas. It was closed for a short period when enrollment topped out but is now open again. I don't expect it to stay open for long though.

Just going by what I'm was told by several close to many of the situations. Maybe the definition of Free/reduced/work program is confused. I don't know. But I'm pretty sure they have scholarships and assistance. Maybe not! Or maybe some do and other don't! I don't know. Can anyone confirm that for us?

Catholic high schools along with grade schools do have tuition assistance but you have to show financial need and the schools do not touch that aspect of it. Outside companies such as FACTS handle this.

Yes. The scholarships I am familiar with are based on the entrance exam score.

 

KHSAA limits any athlete from receiving any scholarship that exceeds 25% of the tuition.

Yes, but I've never seen a scholarship over $1,000; most are $500 or so. That doesn't even begin to cover the costs of Catholic school. I'm not sure how many of the scholarships given in Catholic schools are actually from the school; probably very few. Many are set up by families who have attended the school in the past. For example, Bishop Brossart has the Mitch Orth scholarship that was funded by the Orth family through donations/fundraising to honor Mitch's legacy at Brossart after his death.

Okay, looks like I have that answer. What about number two?

I know the diocese dictates "feeder" schools for each catholic high school but as you know, I don't buy into that. If I did, I'd have just celebrated a Brossart graduation instead of a NewCath one! Someone else is going to have to defend the Diocese on this one.
