So if my son will be a senior at Highlands, he can play summer basketball for Newport Central Catholic?

 

Ben Weyer did it his Frosh to be year. He was enrolled at both HHS & NCC and participated on NCC's Summer team before deciding to go on the hill. Sounds crazy that it's allowed but it did indeed take place in his situation.

I assume that this has to deal with the newscasters kids. My question is if you are a middle school student at a public school, can you participate in the summer at a high school in which you are not a student?

I have heard that one of them is playing Summer Ball at NCC. Been to most of the workouts. But I was also told he/she could be heading to Holy Cross. I know for a fact that neither are enrolled at Holy Cross. Yet! I also know that at least one of them have not been to a single workout at Highlands. When the Highlands coaches inquired about the absence they were told that they(the family) were working out a couple days a week with a personal trainer and attending Highlands workouts weren't needed. That's pretty interesting!

Well, personally I think that is bush league. If you are not going to go to the high school you are working out with, then find somewhere else. Funny, some of these parents seem to do this for their own sake. They act like they want schools to fight over them. Sorry but much rather win/lose with kids and parents that want to be there than those that are shopping their talents. Gone on a bit of a tangent with this thread now hasn't it.

I am not seeing the gray area that states these rules only apply to the school year. The rules I posted are part of the the recruiting rules. The only impermissable contact per Case BL 16-6 that says anything about the school year is #13 . "(13) Making athletic facilities (including weight rooms and other training facilities) available during the school year;"

 

So is it a violation for a school (private or public) to invite MS kids to participate with their summer programs if they are not in their district or feeder?? This is going on and I was under the impression that is not allowed at all. I can't believe things like that would be allowed in any fashion. If it was legal, wouldn't that be a great way for ALL high school coaches to generate interest in their programs. A kids builds a relationship with kids in a team or is able to play up or more at a different school so that school becomes more attractive! Wouldn't everyone be doing that if it was legal?

 

As far as the kids that are doing it, I wasn't trying to go there with this topic. I'm asking about the schools that are asking multiple kids to come "try out" their program in the summer and are not enrolled in their school.

You mean over 50% for non athletes because athletes can't get over 25% per Khsaa rule Right?

 

The 25% is the limit for a scholarship.

 

I don't know of ANY high school that gives a penny to a student just because of athletic prowess.

 

At NewCath and I'm sure Clyde can attest at CovCath, scholarships are give based on varying criteria, none of which is based on athletics.

I have NEVER seen "said newscasters" kid/s play, are they All-Region material?

BTW, I'm not making a stink about a softball player that went to St.Therese (NewCath feeder) and played on our freshman team from 6th-8th grade and then went to Highlands as a Freshman......we were happy for the kid whatever school she went to.

For me, I could care less where a kid chooses to go to school as long as that school plays by the same rules as everyone else. That's why I'm asking about the rules.

 

Remember, this started about if there are any advantages. If it's accepted that a private school can "invite" MS kids that aren't currently enrolled in their school/district/feeder to come participate in summer activities, then that is an advantage.

Are you sure an invitation was sent or did they just show up? Open Gym is simply that.....open to whoever shows up.

What if it's not "open gym" and they participate in summer leagues and workouts after being invited by the coaching staff to participate.

 

Several are being asked. I have no idea who has taken them up on it or enrolled as a result. But they aren't hiding the "asking" at all. That why I was curious if it's okay to do. Because I had no idea you could and I would have open practices every week and invite all of NKy if I was allowed!!! LOL!

I know at Campbell County if you are NOT in their feeder schools you can not play on any of the school teams or summer league teams, even if that kid plans on attending CCHS. We've had kids in the past that went to St. Mary's that were no doubt going to CCHS but couldn't play on any school affiliated team. On the other hand we've had kids in our feeder schools all the way to 8th grade that opted to attend NCC, HHS and Brossart. It does seem sometimes our hands are tied and their are unfair advantages. I'm sure Brossart feels that way about St. Mary's and St. Joes kids going to Ncc and both Ncc and Brossart feel that way with a lot more St. Joes kids attending Cov Cath. Not sure what's right and what's wrong but I feel like RCC9, give me the kids that want to be there, if a parent is willing to drive a kid from Campbell County to Kenton County to attend Cov Cath everyday then so be it. I want kids that want to be at that school not ones that are second guessing their decision.

The same argument could also Apply here when NCC could possibly gain a Softball Player from HHS that has played for the Frosh team since 5th grade and even played on the JV team this past year as a 7th grader. It happens all the time!

 

I will even add another.....A girl that played on the NCC's frosh team this past year who goes to St Catherine(also another NCC feeder)will more than likely enroll at Highlands next year who by the way lives in Ft Thomas. That has been the speculation since the feeder school sent the parents a not so nice($) letter on why they never involve themselves in the Church that much anymore but spend countless dollars on the School & Fundraisers at the same time. I know you know exactly who I am talking about. If it is in fact true then shame on the powers to be. Sounds to me like you shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you kind of thingy!

Actually both are above average Athletes. As far as All-Region material it depends who you ask! I personally think both kids improve your teams chances....Now what comes with it! That's for another thread......:wacky:
