When parents work as in mow, clean the school, work in the kitchen, etc to work off some of the tuition. This can't be new. I have seen this going on in private elem, ms, and hs for 25 years.

Unless that family didn't want to be the "bell ringer" due to putting thier child thru it.

 

Maybe they knew it was happening, but weighed the other consequences and said it wasn't worth the trouble. Because I'm pretty sure that has happened this past year, hearing thru pretty reliable sources.

 

So how does some of these inner city kids that never attended a catholic school or has ties to the church end up affording to go a private school? I'm talking about kids that couldn't afford ANY tuition.

 

Didn't Lex Christian get sanctioned from the KHSAA for financial aid violations?

 

Yes they did.

 

Lexington Christian Academy has been penalized for a violation of KHSAA Bylaw 10 (recruitment). Penalties

included a $3,000 fine, restitution for the KHSAA’s investigation in the amount of $10,982.50 and one year of

probation. LCA representatives are also required to appear before the KHSAA Board of Control at its February

meeting to discuss their athletic program and provide new policies and procedures developed to prevent future

occurrences.

“We conducted a detailed investigation, working with the administrators and staff at the school,” KHSAA

Commissioner Brigid DeVries said. “We found that over the last few years there were inconsistencies with

regard to financial aid and the lack of policies in place at LCA which comply with KHSAA bylaws. New policies

and procedures the school adopts will hopefully prevent future problems in this area,” DeVries concluded.

 

Now why wouldn't everyone and their brother turn in a school that violated the same thing?

Of course I was talking about those that qualify for financial aid as single parents (for example) who still can't pay all of the tuition or fees. One thing I do know is that even if the students are excellent athletes not all can succeed in private school tough academics. IMO

I didn't do work study in high school but I knew a lot of guys that did. When I got to college, however, I cleaned bathrooms and vacuumed hallways in the dorms as part of the custodial staff as my work study job.

I said I didn't care. I'm asking if it's an advantage. I wasn't the one that was upset about it. They were. And I told you why they didn't. And I wouldn't be surprised if someone doesn't at some point. Again, I could care less if a kid gets a free ride. I was just saying that would be an advantage for a private school. I didn't even know there were khsaa violations for tuition students at private schools!

Out of district kid that wants to go to a different public school. Same as all the private school kids could go for free also to their public district school. But they choose not to. If a kid didn't want to go to his district school and wanted to go to another public school, there is no work study, correct?

I can't answer that.

The problem with this is that just "any" inner-city kid who has need doesn't get the opportunity to attend, but only the one who might able to help 'em get a few more wins will get the opportunity. Now everyone understands that this is standard operating procedures for a Division I program ... but this is high school sports, and the spirit and principle of what should be going on is the issue.

The price public school PARENTS pay for going out of district is nothing compared to what private schools cost, not even close. I am not sure why the private school folks are so upset about SCHOLARSHIPS(they don't give), I mean SPONSERSHIP(which I think they said they do) & WORK STUDY(new to me). Public schools may charge a fee to out of district kids but do not offer work study or assistance in paying the fees.

How about this hypothetical scenario: a public school coach provides "individual instruction" sessions for a fee, and then gets those kids to join the coach's high school program as a player? What an amazing application of capitalism?
