Public VS. Private (I know, I know!)

Featured Replies

Ok this is my last post about htis topic. I think its great when kids work in the summer and learn the value of money. You want to talk about having to earn. In Bullitt Co the schools provide ZERO dollars to the athletic programs, not even a lawn mower of for heaven sakes gas for the mower. Every uniform, shoe, ball, cap & yes even the bus to the game is paid for through fund raising done by the kids and parents. Our girls have been up at 6:30am everyday this week working camp then playing games after camp. All High School athletes work.

As I have said multiple times, I dont care who you have on your team or how they got there. We are going to lace em up and compete.:ylsuper:

What's this thing called a bus that takes you to a game? :lol2: We have cars that do that.

I have a PIPE dream...a PIPE dream that one day, schools will fight over non-athletic students with the same ferociousness as they fight over athletes. A PIPE dream that one day, flute players and chess players will be such highly-sought students, that the inequities of Public vs Private are debated in the BGP non-sports threads. I HAVE A pipe DREAM!

Fixed it for ya.

So how do athletes whose families do not even have the ability to pay 50% tuition show up at catholic schools? Especially when they come from out of state like they do at Trinity and Xavier?

If Michael Bush couldn't receive enough financial aid to attend Trinity that pretty much invalidates your argument.

Also who are all these players you are talking about that are attending T and X from out of state? Are you talking about Deuce Finch? A kid who's dad was on the coaching staff at X? I knew a kid that played soccer at OCHS and lived in the Highlands in Louisville who attended there because his mom worked there, same principle applied for Finch.

What makes you think that it's not feasible to achieve even 50%? It becomes a matter of priority. I know several families who worked 2 and 3 jobs, and their kids attending there worked jobs (like at Kroger) to make it happen. They give up a lot, but it CAN be done.

I'm 100% sure what you are describing happens all the time. Private school families absolutely make a sacrifice and I commend that. But they do choose to do that. So I don't feel sorry for them. It's their choice. But if they feel it's creating a better opportunity for their child, it's awesome!!

However, we can all say that we know joe and Suzy that did it this way. We can all say we know hundreds of examples of this and that. But, that doesn't mean that all the kids at all the schools are doing it correctly, right? There are kids up here and that have recently graduate that either go to school now or recently graduated and did not do what you are describing. And let's say the tuition is $8000. And the kids I'm talking about are most likely not getting academic scholarships, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say they are getting 50 percent off their tuition. Let's say that kid started there in the 7th grade and is now a senior. That means that family has paid $24,000 dollars in the time??? The scenario that I'm thinking of....there is absolutely no way!!! And that's just one kid. I can think of several.

Now again, I don't care! Good for them! I really hope it does well for the kid because the ones I'm talking about seem to be great kids!! The ONLY issue I have with it is the denial that it happens!! The three I can come up with off the top of my head are not doing any kind of work program, they are not acedmically gifted and they are not working 3 jobs, so the only thing they would be getting is the 25 percent financial assistance because I'm sure they qualify for that. So that even makes the example above even more unrealistic when you talk dollars!! And if there is a Sponsor incolved, I bet they aren't related, like someone on here said they needed to be.

Again, I could care less. My daughter has played against all these kids I'm referring to since she played varsity in the 8th grade! I never said a word and could care less. She beat them some and they beat her some. It's the denial and adamant position that is taken by the majority that "it would never happen".

I truly admire what many many catholic families do to ensure the best for their kids! I really do!!! But it happens!! The reason it doesn't get blown up is because you better be 100 percent sure before you blow something like that up at your own school and the hassle that comes along with that Is not worth it when you think about the impact to the kids and to the families that would blow the whistle. I am a coach and I am friends with coaches at private schools. Again, I know it happens and could care less! I don't think it happens as much as many would like to think it does.

Lace'em up and let's play!

That can be a benefit to choosing a private school over an out of district public school. That's where this started.

Now I'm still intrigued on whether you are allowed to invite players to workout and play with your team between the end of school and the dead period.

RCC9 unless you say you live with Grany, I know they check but some people do get by with it.

I guess you have to ask yourself, self, is Granny legal guardian? If so, then not a darn thing you can do about it and it's legal. I have always said if you have first hand knowledge of this happening or any other violation happening at a school, then make that call. Remember, no anonymous calls will be considered by the KHSAA. You have to reveal your identity. You would be surprised how many people back out of that call or letter when they find that out. Good Luck and let us know how it works out.

First, no one is asking for pity. You asked how it would be possible, I simply explained how it could be possible.

As to the last, we don't invite players to work out our play with the team at any time. Once enrolled, THEN kids may work out or play with the team. They cannot participate at all until they are enrolled and a tuition account has been set up, and all that jazz.

Well, shoot...you are kidding, right? I am a prime example that it IS possible. I sent 2 to two different Catholic schools. As such, I wasn't eligible for any family discounts because they were 2 different schools. I worked 2 jobs, one full time, one was considered part time, but I worked 32 hours on average. My daughter worked and contributed toward her tuition. My son worked and contributed to his tuition. Since I worked 2 jobs my income didn't allow too awfully much "demonstrated need". I got about $400/year in financial aid for my kids. So, where did the rest come from? We all 3 shared 1 car until my son's uncle gave him is 20 year old Civic. Then, the 3 of us shared 2 cars. I rode the bus to and from work. I never owned my home, always renting. We didn't take one vacation that entailed hotels/car rentals/air fare,or anything like that. We didn't buy many clothes, and I (luckily) am the queen of stretching a chicken to last a week. We all three also picked up any odd jobs we could to make a few extra bucks.

And it's funny you mention the $8K mark on tuition, because that's just about exactly what I was paying for each at their respective schools. And one kid was an athlete, one was not.

You probably still think it can't be done. And you will never be convinced otherwise.

I should also add...I mentioned in another thread that any acts of kindness I've done for others pales in comparison to what people have done for me, well, the period while my kids were in school has plenty of examples. Friends who helped me out by bringing groceries they "didn't want" any more. My dad bringing me veggies from his garden because they had "too many". Friends and family who bought my kids clothes and shoes for birthdays and Christmas instead of Playstation games, etc. Friends of my kids who worked on our cars so I didn't have to take them to a service station to get them fixed (one of my daughter's friends actually fixed a strut mount for like $15 because he was able to find the part at a junkyard and did all the labor for free).

That's how it's possible.

You think I'm the only one who has friends and family like that? No way.

No one here is questioning your work ethic or self sacrifice. Do Catholic schools have to disclose how the education of their students is funded? Being private institutions, I doubt it.

What makes credibility so difficult for outsiders is the influx of athletes from sub cultures where working for a living is a foreign concept, thereby making self funded education nearly impossible. Can you categorically deny there are 3rd parties funding the education of these athletes?

I understand that the majority do it right! But it does happen! And again. I don't care. It the denial up this way that it never happens when I could name examples right now. It may not be every school and it may be just a vet few, but it's happening and they seem to be pretty open with it. So open that that's why I felt it was legal and why I felt it was an advantage. Because te not hidden at all with the school I'm thinking about.

I have zero doubt "it's happening" occasionally in NKY.

DEAD WRONG. If you don't know what you are talking about, then don't talk about it. I have had kids at 2 different parochial schools and paid tuition for one to attend an independent (public) school. Cost was within a couple hundred of each other.

If you would read the thread without bias, you would see that scholarship and assistance are need based and managed by an outside entity, that doesn't care if you can put a grapefruit through a basketball rim.

Your comments are a true indicator of your ignorance in this matter.

I said it was my last comment but then you insult me.

In my area the charge for open enrollment is no where near the cost of Mercy, Assumption or SHA. So I do know just a little about my area.

Thank you again for making this personal. Once again, and read this closely.....I don't care if a kid is recruited or not, on scholarship, sponsorship or work study. We will compete. The initial question was do private schools have a advantage over public schools....in my IGNORANT(your words) opinion they do.

It's not jus MY work ethic. It's what people who want that for their kids do. There's no "influx". Hell, I went to high school in the 80's and the same kinds of kids were there. If a family wants that for their kids, and they are willing to do what they will need to do, it is possible.

But again, some of you will never be convinced. But there are far more families making this same decision for their non-athlete children than there are athletes. But...let's just pick the segment that concerns us...athletes...because that's the only type of student any one wants to lay some sort of ownership claim to.
