Examining the Prevalence of Deaths from Police Use of Force

Featured Replies

One is too many. But do the lives of those murdered by a rogue police officer matter more than the thousands and thousands murdered by someone else?

Investigate every police shooting. Put body cameras on them. Punish the ones who are wrong. But let's not pretend it happens more than it does.

Every officer who says they are 100% confident they do the job the right way should want a body camera.

However, as I type that, I can also see where they would be afraid their innocent actions might be used against them in a lawsuit.

Their audiences do not want to see both sides. They want to see their beliefs reinforced.

What a shame.

No doubt. That's why I never watch the news. Sports, movies, tv shows and video games for me and that's it.

It happens less often than someone being killed by lightning.

But yeah, it happens.

Random chance versus active involvement. I don't think there are "a lot" of unjustified police shootings, but there are some. The guy that was shot in Cincy last night is an good example: police called to an aggravated menacing, guy comes out with a rifle, police try to eliminate threat by grabbing at rifle, guy gets shot.

Now Black Lives Matter wants a full investigation and plans a march...if guy doesn't have a rifle, or complies, we don't have an issue...

It's pretty simple, don't have a gun, don't risk getting shot and killed....have a gun, in public, it's a risk. Human judgement plays the majority role in these cases

Same here. If a news topic interests me, I come to BGP. I KNOW that I will get diametrically opposing viewpoints.:thumb:

Now you've gone and done it.

Wait, so because there were only 1,491 deaths because of police force in a three year period we should all feel better? :lol2:

Am I misinterpreting the premise of this thread? Is this a "it's not as bad as people think"'kind of thread?

Yes and yes.

And let's not pretend it happens less than it does....

372 times a year is A LOT, IMO. Regardless of the number of interactions.

Read the article that I posted. The number is likely at least double that.

No one does.

372 isn't much at all compared to the total number of homicides in this country, or when you consider that 300 million people live in that United States.

And let's not pretend it happens less than it does....

But the vast majority of those were justified weren't they? The number you need to be concentrating on is the number killed each year that wasn't justified.

We have nothing left to discuss.

Exactly. That's been my biggest gripe with this debate nationwide and what people ignore. Unjustifiable killings. Yes, 1 is too many.

The number you need to be concentrating on is the number killed each year that wasn't justified.

Agreed... Is it more than 0?
