NCAA Rule Changes for 2015-16

The NCAA rules committee got together today to vote on rules changes and the most notable of those changes is a 30-second shot clock. College basketball will adopt the 30-second clock next season, chipping away five seconds from the 35-second clock that had been around since 1993.

There are also three new changes related to timeouts:

1. Number of timeouts reduced from five to four, with no more than three being carried over into the second half.

2. Stricter enforcement of resumption of play coming out of timeouts and after a player has fouled out.

3. Team timeouts with 30 seconds prior to media timeouts will become media timeouts, with exception of first team timeout in second half.

And new rules to reduce the physicality of the game:

1. Strict enforcement of defensive rules.

2. Providing offensive players same principles of verticality protections as defensive players.

3. Move restricted-area arc out from three to four feet.

Other changes include:

– Elimination of five-second closely-guarded call

– Hanging on rim technical foul reduced to one shot

– Allow pregame warmup dunking

– 10-second backcourt timer will not reset after timeout

– Eliminating coach-called live ball timeouts

– Allow instant replay of shots made after shot clock goes off

All proposed rules must be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel on June 8 before becoming officially official.

At first glance I don't have a problem with any of these changes

– Allow instant replay of shots made after shot clock goes off

Guessing that'd be called the Wisconsin rule.

I hate hate hate the elimination of the five-second closely-guarded call. The defender is no longer rewarded for playing great defense. That's crap.

True but refs were so inconsistent in starting and stopping the count, it sucked the way it was.

Yeah but now without the count there is no real incentive to play high pressure defense. You'll just wear yourself out for no reason. Looking at the rules they are definitely trying to spike the offense.

Might be my favorite change. That always annoyed me.

– 10-second backcourt timer will not reset after timeout

– Eliminating coach-called live ball timeouts

Those are both pretty big changes in my opinion.

– Allow instant replay of shots made after shot clock goes off

Knew that would be suggested after the UK vs. Wisconsin game.

Things I like:

- Timeouts close to the media TO's counting as the media TO's.

- 10 second clock doesn't reset after a timeout (Actually love this one)

- Rim hanging tech down to one shot

Dont care for:

- Elimination of the five second count. Gives defenders no incentive to guard closely, IMO.

- Circle being moved farther out

The game will be so much better with these rules.

Have some concerns about moving the arc to 4 feet from 3 feet. Will there be more defensive blocks called?

With you on that one ALL THE WAY. Poor decision to do this I think.

Also do not like taking away the coach called time out during a live ball.

This. Video-game mentality.

The 10 second call eliminates calling time out basically because it will not help you. Be interesting to see if the offense resorts to throwing the ball off the defense like when falling out of bounds.... And why no 10 second count in Womens b-ball. Title IX violation in my mind.

No coach called time outs will help the refs because they will not have to watch the coaches instead of the players. Pregame dunk =meh. 5 second call......refs never got it right so I'm okay with it being gone but reverse the right to change my mind.
