April 28, 201511 yr You all continue to miss the boat when it comes to the Reds. The Reds #1 problem is they can't compete with the payroll they have. Getting prospects is all they can do without mortgaging the franchise and those prospects better contribute big time in their first 2 y-3 years because after that we will be seeing the same type of threads as this one with you all talking about what you can get for them if you traded them because the Reds won't pay them when their contracts are up. So again, why even bother? It's a never ending circle we're talking about here. Then move them to Montreal.
April 28, 201511 yr I told everyon on here last season that this years off season (this pas off season) would be a tough one and it's all because of what they paid Homer Bailey. They couldn't keep Cueto, Bailey and Latos on the roster and more than likely one would be gone before the season started and the one that stays would be the one that ends up getting paid. Sure enough LAtos went bye bye, Cueto should get the contract he deserves but they may have already screwed up when they paid Bailey which was a mistake. Again my point is, the Reds aren't going to pay anyone like they paid Votto again and because of that the prospects better be all stars in their first 2-3 years because that is all we will have them for. Incorrect. You'll have them for 6 seasons before they are arbitration eligible. You can rebuild a farm system fairly quickly if you have 2-3 useful players to trade away. Look at the Cubs since Theo took over. They had a poor farm system then. It is one of the 2 best in the league right now.
April 28, 201511 yr So you'd rather he leave in the offseason and they get nothing in return than getting some prospects that could help in the near future? I'd rather he stay. Him leaving will not help us at all. Let's see if you can follow me here.... We trade Cueto for 3 prospects. 2 of the prospects pan out in the next 2 years and are solid big league players. Their contracts are coming up and the Reds still are a 500 ball club, guess what happens? A thread just like this one is created again with their names in the title. Same story different year. That is the best case scenerio.
April 28, 201511 yr Bingo, and they can't trade off their best players either. Well shoot! Why didn't I think of that! Now we just need a billionaire to purchase the club!
April 28, 201511 yr Bingo, and they can't trade off their best players either. You do realize they have the highest payroll in the NL Central? I don't think expanding the payroll is the answer
April 28, 201511 yr Bingo, and they can't trade off their best players either. So you'd hang on to Cueto for an extra 3 months, let him win the extra 3-4 games over whoever he'd be replaced with, finish 4th then watch him leave as a free agent just so they don't trade off their best player? Then what?

April 28, 201511 yr Bingo, and they can't trade off their best players either. If they are not going to compete this year, why would you keep Cueto past the deadline?

Seeing as he won't be on the team next year, why would you not try to get something for him instead of letting him walk in free agency and not get anything? Actually if they trade him for 3 prospects they have those 3 guys under control for the next 6 seasons, not 2.
April 28, 201511 yr If only the Cardinals would expand the payroll maybe they would be competitive every year. Oh wait... You have to find the right balance of FAs, keeping your own guys, and developing talent. Sometimes you have to let that talent go for the longer term benefit. When that time comes you have to get something in return.
April 28, 201511 yr Prospects are under team control for 6 years though? Ok, again how often does that work out in the favor of the team trading the all star player? Josh Hamilton was traded, he was the best player the Reds had, they got Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera in the deal. How did that pan out? Volquez isn't even with the team anymore and had 1 really good year for the Reds. Rangers got the better end of the deal. You are rolling the dice with "prospects" because you have no idea how they will do in the majors against an already proven player. Reds haven't won it all since 1990, there is a reason they haven't.

Reds Farmsystem is no Cardinals farm system, and the Reds coaching staff is no Cardinals coaching staff.

Yeah the Reds would have been much better sinking $150M into Hamilton and having him relapse. :lol2:

I didn't know you had that kind of inside information.
