Trading Johnny Cueto!

Featured Replies

Ok, again how often does that work out in the favor of the team trading the all star player?

Josh Hamilton was traded, he was the best player the Reds had, they got Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera in the deal. How did that pan out? Volquez isn't even with the team anymore and had 1 really good year for the Reds. Rangers got the better end of the deal.

You are rolling the dice with "prospects" because you have no idea how they will do in the majors against an already proven player.

Reds haven't won it all since 1990, there is a reason they haven't.

It certainly works out far more often than you are implying. No, every top 10 prospect doesn't become an all star. But many become above average players.

Not to be harsh, but the Hamilton deal is a terrible one to refer to because it's anything but an ordinary case. Quite honestly, Hamilton was about 9 months removed from being a drunk, and the Reds had every right to believe he was a ticking time bomb...

Exactly, and the Reds are no Cardinals.

Reds Farmsystem is no Cardinals farm system, and the Reds coaching staff is no Cardinals coaching staff.

You'd have far more ppl agreeing with you if you just said the Reds need to improve their farm system and coaching staff...

By the way... Is trading for prospects a viable way to improve a farm system?

The Reds had one of the best farm systems about 7-8 years ago. Most of those guys are now on the big league club. They haven't done a great job replacing those guys which is why they are in the position they are now. Trading Cueto and Chapman would go a long way in helping rebuild that.

They're in the position they're in now because I'm 2012 they "went for it" and traded their upper level position player prospects.

Btw... Those in this thread saying Votto is worth the money were singing a different tune last year I can almost guarantee it.

I understand people

wanting to trade Cueto etc. my whole thing is you have to have the ability to grow from a trade like that. I don't think the Reds are that franchise. They are not very good at keeping talent and putting the pieces around the talent to be successful in my opinion.

Give me Theo Epstein running the show and I wouldn't mind a Cueto trade because I have faith he can get the players to turn it around. Look what he did for Boston and now Chicago.

Not me. When a player is hurt he's hurt. Same reason I never got upset about Griffey Jr's contract. When healthy he was

worth every penny. Same for Votto.

So until they get an ace GM in place they just shouldn't even try?

It can be done with smaller payrolls, you are correct. The problem is you have to have the scouts and the GM to do that as well as the owner. Our farm system was built up to a pretty good system after Marge was forced to sell only to be ripped right back down with current ownership.

To enable to be successful with a small payroll you have to have the players in your system. Reds don't.

What don't you get. They have the highest payroll in the division. The small market excuse is crap

Out of that list there are 2 players that are great big league players....Votto and Chapman, the rest are scrubs or a little above scrubs. Nothing to brag about. IF they were all so great the Reds would have won something....I haven't seen any of those guys win a playoff series, have you?

Cueto, Frazier and Mesoraco are not scrubs. I wouldn't call Bailey or Leake a scrub either and Hamilton is still figuring things out. I doubt Iglesias becomes a scrub.

The Reds farm system is actually ranked just above the cardinals. They are both middle of the pack.

They can try all they want. They still won't win now and there are the majority in this thread that think trading Cueto will lead to winning more games which will lead to a World Series. I'm just here to tell you all that it will not happen. So instead of having players worth going to the ballpark to watch and play even though they are in a bad team, after the trade there will be very little to get excited about seeing.

I never said Cueto was a scrub. Read my posts in here. I've been against trading him because he is one of the best on this team.

I never used small market as an excuse. I don't believe in small markets with today's TV contracts.

Cueto

Votto

Leake

Bailey

Bruce

Mesoraco

Frazier

Hamilton

Cozart

Iglesias

Chapman

Those guys are all from the Reds system. Looks like all the best players are guys that have come up through the system.

I know you are obsessed with Cueto to the point that you can't think clearly but you left him off. You said Votto and Chapman were the only players that aren't scrubs.

And people say I'm negative …

I don't think anybody advocating a trade of Cueto and Chapman has any grand delusions about those moves making the Reds a WS team right away. Trading them away could land pieces that could lead to future success. You have to keep trying. Doing nothing gets you just that.
